A language barrier.. literally.

Postby Siva » Sun Dec 14, 08 5:59 pm

So back in the Summer me and my friends visited the pool.. alot. It was free, it was hot, it was a great place to pick up girls and exercise.

One particularly sunny day, the good lord blessed us with two particularly beautiful girls. And as a result, I was on it faster than the speed of light, and attempted to call them over. To no avail. They wouldn't turn around at all and there was just me and them in the deep end, leaving me confused.

Then I saw them doing hand signals. Couple seconds later I figured it out.

They're deaf.

My soul was crushed and by the time I gathered enough of their language to forumlate a conversation, they had left.

Fast forward to last week, I rediscovered one of them on a social networking site; and as a result contacted her.

We began talking and now she wants to meet with me, which I am happy to do.

Now, here is where I need help. I've never been out with a deaf person let alone a deaf girl.

Where should we go? Normally I would take them to a film, this is now out of the question for obvious reasons.

Conversation is one of my strong points, especially with jokes, how fast can I learn sign language.

Other general help.

If you can, some non-mainstream movie theatres display films with subtitles, it may come off as a bit cliche, but it could also be interpreted as considerate.

Otherwise swallow your man pride and take her out shopping or something, it's not particularly MANLY, but she might enjoy going around shops and asking for your opinion, which is easy to signal, its either thumbs up or down or the hand stretched out horizontally and wiggle it, the old "maybe, maybe not" signal, that and you would get a chance to check out her figure.

Don't kill yourself that you can't hand sign, if you get with this girl, she will appreciate your slow learning her language. On the date don't be afraid to take like a pad and pen, and write stuff down to communicate, just be polite and don't make it a big issue.

When you take her out to lunch or whatever, go to like a fast food restaurant where she can point at the food she wants, Pizza hut is always good, cos you can sit down she can point at what she wants, and it will only set you back 10-15 quid.

Just don't feel like your an ass because you can't sign, and be confident with her, so that she knows your serious about getting with her instead of "oh i dunno, she is deaf..."

A lot of deaf people can lip read to some degree. Some are very good at it.

Learning sign is brilliant. You can talk to someone across the room or the street and not worry about screaming your lungs out. You can talk stuff that no one else around you can understand.

Like most languages start with the basic stuff.

Thanks. The pad and pen shouldn't be an issue since I have a PDA with a keyboard on it, so I anticipated that.

I had also figured Pizza Hut would be a good choice since they have a buffet thingy and then all you have to do is pay.

She's bringing her friend now for one of my brahs so we will both be in the same boat and should make the entire experience easier.

And even if it doesn't go fantastically well I'll get a little insight into how deaf people do things and that's something I've always been a bit mystified about.

When I first saw that you had a new topic in your journal I thought someone's got beaten again

Back in primary school my female classmates invented a weird language that even deaf people could understand if they were told what the meaning of the signs were.
They had different signs for every single letter and they could communicate so fast with hands that I couldn't catch up even when they told me what the meaning of those signs were. They didn't communicate like that all day, only when helping eachother on tests ( It was extremely useful when all you had to do is underlining the right answers :) ) or when they wanted to tell eachother something during the lesson. I found that amazing.

It was pretty good.

First we all met up in Greenwich and hopped on one of those boats with the tour and whatnot. I had the idea that it would be cold and lo and behold she wasn't wearing a proper jacket. So I stole the movie routine and gave her mine.

She can lipread pretty well and I understood most of her signing so conversation wasn't really an issue.

For me.

My bro crashed and burned for the most part. She was feeling a little seasick (she'd never been on a boat before) and tried to lean on his shoulder and he pushed her off and told her to wake up and all we could do was laugh at the unfolding debacle.

We got off at Waterloo and got my favourite pancakes and hot dogs and just walked around the city. Gawking at things and making idle 'signversation'.

At the end we came back to Greenwich (By taxi for I am balla) and sat in the park pointing at things and sharing a large foam cup of coffee. My mate took his girl and went missing for the moment we got there for the best part of two hours which we didn't really mind.

She came back in tears and he was jogging after her telling her to calm down (Like shouting to a deaf person is effective). We soon noticed her jeans were wet and he stated that it would be a funny joke to 'dip' her in the lake. He's a large guy so I assume he just picked her up.

At the end we took our seperate ways home (me and my date and him and his) and she gave me a kiss and we hugged for a bit and then she took my phone and made an appointment. She wouldn't let me read it but after she closed the door and went in I couldn't help myself. It said '<hername>'s New Years Party. 6pm to ?'

And then I went home. Haven't seen my friend since actually..
