Noob's guide to single-player Deus Ex mods, texture packs, graphic improvements, etc

Postby kohan69 » Thu Mar 18, 10 10:31 am

Greetings.

Let's say a person is shameful enough to have never played Deus Ex 1.

What mods/patches/etc would one get for an optimal experience?

From my searches I gathered many:

OpenGL render
DirectX10 render

Deus Ex HDTP

New Vision
Reborn

Hardcore DX
Deus Ex Revision
Summer 101
Shifter
Chronos: Deus Ex

Which are best and why?
Are some of them compatible with each other?

Please guide me.[/list]

To be honest, if you've never played DX, just go for it with no mods / anything else, play it as it was made.

I agree with MainMan, don't get mods until AFTER you've played the game the first time.

I lied. I played it, but not finished, around its release a decade ago.

Unlike old stars like Half Life or System Shock, the original gameplay of Deus Ex can barely be improved with mods. I would only recommend getting Enhanced OpenGL or DirectX 10, but they won't do much magic, and possibly New Vision although I have not tried it personally.

The HDTP is still in development (and seems abandoned to me), and the only downloadable beta replaces only a small number of models.

Dead project, they wanted to move Deus Ex onto Unreal Tournament 2004 engine

Oh, and make sure that your game is either GOTY edition or patched to 1112fm.

There's a really bad mod I hate which people keep recommending which includes throwing knives, front flips, sentries, weapon rebalance and gay shit.

What is the point?, only amazing simple mod is the crossbow grappling hook so I can be batman.

Surely it's kinda boring if you're already batman IRL though?

#-o

That's SPIDERMAN, not BATMAN

anyway.

Is GOTY edition same as retail patched to 1112fm ?
Are there any unofficial patches that fix further bugs?

New Vision texture/model upgrade, anyone tried it?
I thought it's compatible with HDTP

GOTY edition is the same as retail patched to 1112fm, with the multiplayer patch installed (and perhaps SDK?)

New vision isn't completed, they've only done about 60% of the textures so far.

Patching keeps the maps you have from the older game in the same state as before. GOTY uses the latest versions of the SP maps.

Probably why I never get the "missing music" bug in one of the levels IIRC.

Does GOTY Deus Ex have a Baton by the 3 crates when you first start the game at UNATCO Island?

*shrugs*

I don't know if you have the DX GOTY edition... I have the SP maps etc. from 1.03.

No, I have the (very) first edition of DX, and I patch it to the latest (GOTY-equivalent). This is how I know that it replaces the maps...

Eh, I'll take your word for it. Not like it matters really, the changes are miniscule map-wise at best.

It's not abandoned per se, it's just that they lost a lot of staff due to other problems. I believe they were looking for either a modeller or a texturer but I don't remember which.

Their Denton cracknoses and Gunther stuble is the worst thing I've seen happen to DXSP. Why redesign the characters aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Careful, they might sign up on the forums and call you a dumbass for slightly criticizing their mod. That's what happened with me at least.

Read about some mod on dxediting a while back that effects some of the controls and makes them more like Half Life, such as being able to crouch mid-jump

Meh, to each his own. I think some of the models are decent.

I recommend you playing DeusEx without any mods, only with the 1112fm patch. If you have an old DeusEx version patch it before starting the SP game, because you can get weird errors if you update the game and load a save game from older dx versions, it happened to me once. :P

After playing DeusEX without any modifications I recommend you the DeusEx Revision mod and TNM.
