Computers & Email in DXMP

Postby Shinobi » Tue Aug 10, 10 4:20 pm

Hey guys.

Set up a few humourous usernames and funny emails to add a bit of fun to my DXMP maps, got my own package set up and text embedded as per Steve Tack's tutorial.

One teeny problem... they only work offline. Anybody know how to make 'em work in multiplayer??

Also if anyone could point me to someplace to start learning uscript/modding, please let me know.

I believe the best place to start coding would be with a sodacan.

Actually. There's a tutorial somewhere for it as well. I either saw it on tack's or DXediting. I think it was tacks.

Yeah it was tack's I've done that. I've made the custom computers work in SP but not in MP.

Huh. Dunno why I haven't posted here, but I managed to get computers / emails to work on LAN earlier this year (by making it get email info from variables in the computer class; window seemed fine, it seemed to be the packages / parser that had a problem) - haven't tested it online though. If it goes well I'll paste a .u file and code here.

Don't quote me on this but if it works in LAN it should work online, right?

Bit late to start learning to code for dx lol but it's something I've wanted to know from day one just never bothered learning. I STILL can't find a decent place for coding tutorials online.

I sort of (and I mean SORT OF) get the idea of classes expanding classes etc, but... err, not really.

I also followed Tack's tut for custom computer classes (own logo, custom computer screen etc), I'd like to be able to use this online if possible.

If you're gonna test and post the files, thanks :-)

Isn't LAN useless for testing replications?

Not if you have two computers on the same server & network.
Preferably in the same room too.

Yeah, but testing alone on it == SP

no

playing a non-dedicated server = SP

playing a dedicated server (even if its on the same machine) is different

Neither is single player, it's playing it alone in a multi player setting.

Yeah, but it's about the way DX handles things. If you summon an object that is not in ServerPackages, noone can see it, except for the server hoster and only if the server is hosted non-dedicated. If it's hosted dedicated, noone can see objects from not-loaded ServerPackages.

I wonder... suyrely there's something we can do with DX that hasn't been done?

Alex's innovations were cool such as that map thingy he did to show player locations, and my shameless rip-off of phpstats server info lol.

I used to like the spiderbot which opened player's browser to my clan website.

There is a lot that was always thought to be impossible but I eventually managed to make them possible.

Unfortunately, I lost the source of many modifications with the crash of a HDD of mine.

Turns out I can't host a server; I'll upload it here anyway and hopefully it'll work. I can't see why it wouldn't though. Source code included in .zip for anyone interested. :)

By the way, if you've had a chance to test it online yet, how did it go?
