Alright...turn down the flames for a second.

Tantalus, you probably have too many things running. Press ctrl+alt+del and check processes (as Darren said). If there is a shit load of things in there using a lot of memory, that could be your problem. Now, rather than going on an 'End Process' spree, check your system tray for currently running programs. Exit the ones you aren't currently using. If you don't use them often, set them to NOT load on startup. If it still doesn't work...then I can't help.
