DXMP Slimline/Online Play

Postby Alistair » Wed Aug 27, 08 5:29 pm

I've seen a few forums and DX related sites saying this is legal.

Is this really so cause I'm sure distributing proprietary software for free is not legit. In addition modifying and redistributing properitary software is not legit either. Could someone have a read of the DX license included in the installation files and check?

I've never claimed that SlimLine 1.0 is legal. And I've read the DX license, as well as the SDK license.

I'm not an expert in law, but I think there is a certain "level" of legality (or in other words, how hard is it to prove that something is against the law). In light of this, SlimLine is less legal than dejavu's distribution, because it contains some files that weren't included in either free 111fm MP patch or free demo. But nor SlimLine, nor dejavu's distribution are absolutely legal. But they're certainly much more legal that redistributing the whole Cd image through the internet like many people do.

To make an even more legal MP distro, I'd have had to tell users to download 1112fm MP patch and demo manually, and then tell them to download my program which would unpack files from there and mix them into another distro.

And talking about absolute legality... I'm not sure that hosting DX demo is legal either :lol:

Cause Eidos sell Demos too, but for a low rate then the real game,

Like if the game is 20$

The demo will be like 5-10$

Heh.. i suck at giving examples.

But the main point is, its copy righted too aint it? D:

Is HDD's "Version" of Slimline more/less legal or w/e than yours?
Hey all!

Im finally releasing this slimline.
It is the demo combined with the MP patch. (as both are avalable free)

It is like a normal slimline with a few twists:

It has hostable maps. (they can be hosted without the missing texture / music files etc)

It has a readme explaining about teamswitching etc.

It has: nepthys, MTL etc preinstalled.

More masterservers combined (uplink and client side)
MasterServers[0]=master0.gamespy.com
MasterServers[1]=master.hdd21server.co.cc
MasterServers[2]=master.fragaholic.com
MasterServers[3]=master.zeroserver.co.cc

Thank redfire as hes bought the fragaholic domain and hosting masterserver.

If one goes, the others still work.

I stipped out the 3 SP maps there as they arnt required.

the whole thing compressed comes to just over 100 MB.

I did this slimline to try and bring in new players (ill put up the link on a few gaming forums)

and to prolong dx (if gamespy goes down we still get new players).

http://rapidshare.com/files/135356081/DeusExMP.zip.html

enjoy :)

Read somewhere (think it was dxmp.net - which btw, used to be good, it's crap now!) that dxmp multiplayer only version is legal coz it's made from stuff freely available anyway... really can't see how that can be in any way a copyright infringement.

S'pose ya not meant to reverse-engineer commercial shit, but... ah well tough titties Deus Ex won't be making them any profit these days anyway. Specially since you can pick it up from shops for like £1.99

I'm pretty sure redistributing is prohibited

Yeah, been reading the license!

Redistrbuting is illegal. Also, for less commercial licenses than DX (e.g. a lot of freeware software) even have restrictions (not allowed to modify if you wanna distribute it).

Hell, even some open source stuff has restrictions on how you can modify it sometimes!

So yeah - I was wrong.

That probably wouldn't be that illegal if they were all legally purchased DX discs... I'm sure transfer of legal owner can't be illegal.... ;)

With many games, you're not supposed to install it on more than one computer once bought. I also remember something about you're not supposed to even lend it to someone? I'm not sure.

I think lending is technically illegal if they install it!

I'm not sure about the one computer per game thing. S'pose that's why with much office software you must buy x number of licenses.

Steam is gay. I can not play CSS because my brother bought it, and I would have to pay the same amount for a new game just to get an account.
