Xfire Rank : #476

down from #397 yesterday

Highest: #59 on 2004-06-17

Why the heck was it so high ranked in 2004? Was dx among first games they added to xfire or what gives? Some specific mod? I started playing dxmp almost exactly the date that rank has, and I sure as hell dont remember much activity in dxmp besides 20 noobs in godz castle. I dont remember much fuss going on on the PDX either.

I have a theory that 2004 was actually where Deus Ex was most active, I cannot prove it but that's where a huge influx of players came from. Not many clans and players survived the golden age (2001- and I may be pushing it with 2003) and there were like as many clans back then as they were according to all the information I can get (clanwars, funnily enough [3] are the only clan in my resources who had considerably more than 5 average matches a year! 9 in 2002 and 6 in 2003!)

Xfire isn't popular these days, that's my answer.

I wonder if xfire for some reason was a bit more popular among dxers at that date, than perhaps in many other games. I registered in january 2005, but lot of the other dxers registered mid-2004. And the reason I registered in the first place was because lot of people I knew used it.

Deus Ex GOTY got released with Thief in a double package that year. Many people bought it.

IMO It was official DX, not GOTY, and Thief II, Not Thief, I've bought it.

To be honest i don't think Deus Ex being released on STEAM had any effect on DXMP. It's amazing enough that Deus Ex still holds its legendary status.

Actually, I do remember Steam having a bit of an impact. I have to work by my bad memory here but I remember we were all excited about how that would turn out, and in the end a new generation of players did show up. Unfortunately by dxmp standards new generation means maybe 20 people, these years. Most of them didnt stick around too long, and those who did I never really got to know them. Maybe some of them are in EdH as well.. or posting here. All I remember is that when I took a good look at DXMP suddenly it was populated by players I had never seen before.

Anyhow, I suppose part of that new generation was the natural inflow dx experiences every year, so the impact of releasing it on Steam was quite small.

There was a considerable impact from Deus Ex 2 release in 2004. At least, 2004 seemed a lot more active than 2003 to me.

Edit: fixed

We're living in a generation of extreme nostalgia, I'm also sure it will affect it.

True.

I'm looking for an old obsolete game system from the mid-late 80's to early 90's that I used to play as a kid, just so I can play Sonic games I bought.

There's plenty of impact from Steam and Gametap and sequels. Just not for the multiplayer. Sure they'll try it once or twice, but the remains of the community are made up of players who are for the most part experienced enough to streak a merciless shut out against newbies.

In one word: discouragement.

That, and the fact the singleplayer was 10 times better.

That is kind of surprising to hear, coming from you. But I cant disagree with that.

Oh if we're including single player, Steam has had tons of sales. I persuaded 15 people who've never played to buy both DX1 and 2 pack on steam.

I want a prize! :x

On a different note, who still uses Xfire? =/ Steam seems to have replaced it I'd say.

I use Xfire myself, prefer it. Was the first thing I used, also doesn't take a bitch and a half (resource-wise) to run like Steam does.

At this moment xfire is using up 39MB RAM and steam is using up 44MB RAM, doesn't seem like a massive difference resourcewise to me..

Well both are using up 0% of the CPU, according to taskmanager :3 I don't think anything under 1% would have a massive impact on the performance.

but it cud b dat steem uses 10 tiems more cycles ye
