Random bump, but at the time I posted FGS forums were basically dead, there'd been like <5 posts in the public sections over a week, which is why I posted it. It's more active now.

Ye I've been away, I realize how dead we were in the summer now.

The previous suggestion that rarely more than 20 online at a time was true I think. But in this month I have restarted playing, I think it would be fair to say that for the last few weeks at least the numbers are now more like 25, with a peak last Sunday of 34. I was seeing 5-15, I'm seeing 15-25 now and I'd bet some of those fakers are actually new players.

I think when it hits 30-40, it will be like an engine finding the right speed, it will kick in.

This is an amazing guide:
http://kentie.net/article/dxguide/

It would be great to be able to have some of your knowledge work available on other sites as well if at all possible, when the time comes.

One question to everyone. How many players realistically do you think DX3 and ourselves can bring to DXMP in the next six months?
50? 500? more? What percentage of DX3 players will go on forums and read about DXMP and the multiplayer projects and having entered a server will still be playing 1-3 months later.
Also Steam, does anyone have figures for Steam sales per month?

This would tell us how bad we are at retaining new players.

The numbers depend entirely on marketing, advertising. Have to advertise the right qualities, show the right features. That in itself wont guarantee that the players will remain, of course. As I've told you before somewhere, I am indeed somewhat puzzled that the staff would show interest in a project such as this. It is possible that they have little or no knowledge of what dxmp is or looks like.

Which is why a server with iceworld, pacman, sniperbox and SOME of the more basic/empty rtk and dxms maps on repeat rotation would kill Deus Ex. The opposite too is true, a server with only Skyline, SG, DayAfter maps would kill it also.

Since I don't think their offer of support is just empty words, I would agree. Also it is amazing that they still advertise DX1 directly on their DX: HR sites.
Clearly a lot of the Unreal community close to them saw DXMP as if it was still 2001, they were discussing a 56k game lol. We put that straight and showed some of the advancements in editing and how a multiplayer map these days can be more complex than a single player map.
Also a lot of my discussion with the Marketing Director was "carrot and stick" I showed them some pretty big carrot, world records, PR kudos and being able to separate themselves from the games industry a little. And generally people like Rene and Kyle seem to go out of their way to convince people that Eidos are a nice bunch of people who respect the customers.

Also Ken, I have a lot of experience in selling ideas to famous companies.

Selling the idea to the company is not the same as selling it to the player, hence why we play only select games and even then have to mention how they lack in areas titles from decade back had well covered.

Iceworld is on constant rotation because it works. It should be in the "How to build DXMP map" manual, unless the mapper has enough experience with mapping for active servers in other games with similar goals and movement. Is it a great map? Not even close. Is it better than most custom DXMP maps? Oh yes.
Essentially, Iceworld is the DXMP_Smuggler stripped and dumbed down to the very core. Why is Smuggler popular? Because it works. Why is DXMP_Smuggles one of the most played an popular custom maps? Because it works. Smuggles is an excellent map that lacks a little and covers a lot.

As I said before, I couldn't disagree with you more.

Stats show that RTKM_Spirit and Moenia are more popular than Iceworld if mapvote is added. Spirit is very similar, but it has proper lighting and shadows, proper spawns, some cover, corners etc.

Iceworld is a very small and basic map which lacks ALL Deus Ex map elements, except gas and lam, including spawns. It might be popular with pros, but there are more newbs than pros in DX atm.

And just to let you know, Smuggles is the only custom map that comes with a GD server. So that could be one reason it is on so many servers as well. The first customers in DX were auggers.

I dont remember Moenia, but Spirit is okay map, while Iceworld is a skeleton of a good map. If you dont like Iceworld, you can have Spirit loop endlessly, by all means. I bet that proves me wrong. Most of the custom maps have ALL your Deus Ex _map elements_ that you want so bad, but they dont work as proper, interesting multiplayer maps. Thats my point.

That map with the pyramid for example.. what the heck? Random ditch at the base of a random pyramid which steps work as an elevator? You can pretty much shoot from anywhere into anywhere on the map because its so open? If you make a big open map then you cant go wrong with the pathing, but you end up with one big boring box.

I thought iceworld was the most favourite among the 'newbs', usually over half of the people on the server vote for iceworld. But I'll admit that was 2-3 years ago or so... did the players really change their view on that map over time?

not sure where shadow is coming at because I've seen many (so-called) newbs vote Iceworld over and over & say it's their favourite map.
I personally have never liked Iceworld, but lots of people do.
And I don't find it ugly (like most custom maps). :D

Hey, I'm not bitching Iceworld, it's a great map, all I'm saying I wouldn't have it as like a "welcome to DXMP" flagship map. And I stand corrected, I didn't know newbs vote it so much.

Ken's talking about DXMS_Sanctum. Moenia is similar layout to Smuggler, blue and white and grey colours. It's got a room that players can enter and block other players from entering. I don't particularly like it. Challenge is a much better map, feels much more Deus Ex and the music is sick. Spirit and Challenge are the only maps I turn on music for.

The only map I would "loop endlessly" is Smuggler or CMD.

And again, it's a sweeping statement to say "most" custom maps. There's nothing much wrong with gameplay on Proteus, Amtrack, [A]Medieval, [A]Patres, RTK_Challenge, TunnelNetwork, DXAC_Dragon, DXMS_Foregone, DXMS_Chasm, DXMP_S3x, DXMS_Dust, DXMP_Prodigy etc. They have all the elements of Deus Ex mapping and they work very well for gameplay. Some actually have shitty spawns as well, but the map is a lot fun, I guess that is why Iceworld is so popular.

Admittedly mappers do very well when they base it on a Counter-Strike or Unreal map.

I disagree. My favorite user maps were original works. Smuggles by TCN, 8red by Kryss, HouseArrest, etc.
