Shinobi 24/7 (kinda) Server

Postby Shinobi » Wed Aug 03, 11 1:07 pm

Guys, got a 24/7 server running. Using it to test new maps etc or whatever you guys wanna try out.

It's not very powerful tho lol just a home-host running 24/7* up my flat while I'm down my parents' house.

Lemme know if anyone wants anything tested I'll upload.

Hi,

you could try out my AdminKeypad mod along with some unreleased maps since I cannot run my own server 24/7, as you might remember from my old topic:

http://www.dxalpha.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16858

I got a test map coming up for the AdminKeypad. It's called DXMP_SecretArea_S-3.

I'll post it in the Modifications forum sometime this week...

Yeh so it does have some usefullness then? For some RPG servers the AdminKeybad is a good tool.

Adminkeypad = no

That is that.

Even rpg maps would be more fun knowing that there is no restricted area only for admins.

Yup. Fuck I just royally fucked up, too.

Had TightVNC server running on PC up my flat so I could control and access it etc.

Accidentally closed TightVNC now and all I can access is my router admin page up there.

Server's still running as far as I know (it's at shinobi8796.zapto.org) but isn't appearing in list for long after it starts up. Weird.

Anyway now I can't shut PC down remotely my fridge is gonna defrost. BALLS.

Sorry to hear that, Shinobi.

Never mind, I can run my own server anytime, since I have a new router and know how to set everything up without any port forwarding problems or DX version crashes now. Only thing is I can't run 24/7, as I said. So people have to be at the right time in the right place. :P

@all:

As far as the AdminKeypad rant is concerned... The whole point of having admin areas in my maps is to add a new gameplay element in multiplayer, for fun reasons. In those areas I usually put computer consoles or switches with which one spy the map with cameras, watch other players fight (as sort of spectator) or open/close other secret rooms temporarily. It can also include heavier or special weapons and items.

However, in my maps the "admin area" is usually just one medium-sized room, never a bigger section! The smallest admin area would be a lumber-room or just an empty 256x256x256 brush box with a computer console inside. But I use my imagination in UnrealEd to make the admin areas more interesting.

Sure, it may not be everyone's kind of beer, but I'm not concerned about that. Players who like to explore stuff in Deus Ex, even in multiplayer, will learn to admire these areas. I'm sure, because I like them too.

Besides, in the map I mentioned above you can crouch into the admin area through a secret duct or shaft without even using the AdminKeypad or knowing the code. D'oh.

So much for that.

NO offence but admin this and admin that kinda all sounds a bit 13-year-old.

Perhaps an adminkeypad which would open up a special admin preferences or server admin menu, now THAT would be impressive, and probably not impossible

LOL! Do I really sound like a 13-year-old here? I'm twice that old at least. That comment of yours just made my day.

The AdminKeypad is supposed to open non-hackable/non-pickable doors to secret areas in multiplayer maps and not to pop up admin menus with cheat options and shit.

Perhaps I should have called this tiny mod of mine SecretKeypad or NonHackableKeypad instead of AdminKeypad.

Then there wouldn't have been such a misconception of it.

Noooo not meaning things in an insulting way, just reminds me of back in the day when kids wanted admin rooms lol!

I actually like the idea and would use it. I once made a serious fighting map with an admin room full of porn calenders and shit, looked like a dodgy inner-city taxi office lmao.

Define "back in the day" more precisely. What time are you speaking of? 2000? 1996? Or even earlier? Because if someone says "back in the days" to me I think about the late 1980s and early 1990s when I was a kid, teenager and so on.

Screw it. It's not called "AdminKeypad" anymore. I just renamed it to SexyKeypad. ;)

LMFAO.

Sorry mate I'm not usually this rude, I'm 23 by the way, and back in the day for me refers to circa 2006 in this specific instance which is when I began playing deus ex. I back up that comment because maps such as funline (which, although stupid, are brilliant in their own right) were made by guys aged around 13-16 AFAIK.

I'm sorry if I don't always make sense, I've not conversed with you before so perhaps I just didn't make the effort to write meaningful, relevant posts.

The AdminKeyPad sounds good but I have been told by a few reliable sources that making a non-hackable keypad is almost impossible. But again this could be me misreading what you mean, do you mean unhackable as in "can't multitool it" or unhackable as in, it simply cannot be hacked at all in any way? IF so that's rather cool.

And of course I will try your mod and I'm also willing to host any maps you like. I'm even going to give SELECTED people FTP access to the server once I've patched up security, as it is my home computer, but only used for gaming nothing sensitive.

But as I said, my electricity has run out while I'm away (or something has gone seriously wrong with my router and/or no-ip redirect).

And for the porno textures... it was just a giggle. :-)

nothing is impossible in UScript (unless ofcourse you want to delete someone's system folder)

I don't know why the freaking hell are you folks ranting about this thing.. AdminKeyPad is just a name and a normal keypad.. Since we're at it.. discussing the whole admin room thingie.. so let's talk.. as you've mentioned Funline already.. let's talk about that.. if you don't remember... these maps already have Admin areas. Oh and.. Last time [A] hosted it did had admin rooms, and ofcourse the Lee's Map. If anyone remembers, there was an Admin Zone there.. if you're not an admin you get kicked. But anyhow, the point is.. It's a good and I don't mind it at all. It's neat and doesn't spoil the gameplay at all.. and about Lurker..I'm happy people still want to work on DX modding. It isn't hurting anyone nor does it ruin any atmosphere of the game.. infact it's a neat little additional element in the game.

The keypad is a normal Keypad.. just like BladePad or any other keypad.. it makes codes work on multiplayer.

I see. I began playing Deus Ex in the early stages when it was released in 2000. Before that I played a lot of Unreal Tournament online and Half-Life.

I didn't take you as rude. I was just confused about some things you said. But I think I get the idea now.

I back up that comment because maps such as funline (which, although stupid, are brilliant in their own right) were made by guys aged around 13-16 AFAIK.

You are very observing. Guess on what I based the AdminKeypad... On FUNLINE ofcourse. I always liked their mods and joined funline servers! I didn't know that these guys were 13-16. I think their mods added interesting gameplay elements to Deus Ex. I still base my DX mods on funline today. Now that you revealed that these modders were much younger as I expected it is even funnier for me to realize that I enjoyed "stupid" mods made by kids.

The problem is I want to give people the answer to this question, but I can't do it as long as I haven't fully tested the mod on a server with other players whether it's completely hackproof or not. The only safe answer I can give is that the keypad can't be hacked by multitools in singleplayer and in multiplayer mode.

But as I said, my electricity has run out while I'm away (or something has gone seriously wrong with my router and/or no-ip redirect).

Again, I'm sorry that it happened to you. I know how much it sucks and goes on nerves when a router or modem doesn't work as expected.

And for the porno textures... it was just a giggle. :-)

Yeah. But you know what... I actually like porno textures. 8)

Friends?? *flutters eyelashes*

No problem.

Lol exactamundo.

Yeah I was pretty gobsmacked how good people were aged 13-16. I didn't have my first PC until I was 11 and the first game I played for any length of time was DX. I didn't have the 'net until 06 though, which sucked.

Hey, nothing is boring or corny in my mind, I cannot make mods, I cannot map well, and I've made almost zero effort to learn, so kudos to anybody who makes anything!

Back to topic, here's a list of some of my unreleased DXMP maps I can offer for running on servers:

DXMP_ParisHotel
DXMP_ParisCatacombs
DXMP_MolePeople
DXMP_NSFHQ_B3 = Basement of the NSF Headquarters map, still a beta version.
DXMP_Rydberg_Field = A mp conversion of the known Rydberg Field singleplayer custom map.
DXMP_Smuggler_Rooms = A fast-paced version of DXMP_Smuggler with the inner section only.
DXMP_Smuggler_Extended = An extended version of DXMP_Smuggler with new areas added.
DXMP_SecretArea_S-3 = A playable mp test map for the AdminKeypad with various areas taken and merged together from the original DX Area 51 sp maps.

If anyone is interested in a particular map listed above then just tell me and I will release it......

Please note that some of these maps are still unfinished and need some final touches in UnrealEd before I can finally release them.

DXMP_ParisHotel is the most complete.

DXMP_MolePeople is 90% complete. The layout and everything else is there, but I need to add more weapons and items in logical places.

From the other maps DXMP_Smuggler_Rooms is 100% finished and can be released anytime!

DXMP_SecretArea-S-3 is going to be finished this weekend, probably on saturday or sunday.

Oh and none of the maps has pathnodes. I removed all of them, so there is no support for botmatch. But I can add pathnodes if required.

Would be good, I don't know how they work, or hide points etc. I'm using RedGreasel's MP bots at the moment but can't seem to create an accurate sniper, that's what I'm after.

Could you upload smuggler rooms somewhere now? I'm hosting atm.

I don't have experience with RedGreasel's MP bots. Is it enough when I place standard PathNode and HidePoint actors or do I need to set any special settings or add classes from RedGreasel's mod to make bots work in my maps?

Yes, but wouldn't it be better to add PathNodes to DXMP_Smuggler_Rooms first? Or do you need bot support for DXMP_MolePeople only?

Well, I've just finished adding PathNodes and AmbushPoints (for bot sniping) to DXMP_Smuggler_Rooms anyway. I think it's wise to add bot support to DXMP maps these days by default for people who may need it.

I will upload and release the map sometime today. See Modifications forum...
