Hacking Guide

Hacking is somewhat difficult to adjust to initially, especially as you don't have good upgrades.

Upgrades to get;

- Stealth 1 -3 for sure
- Fortify is good but not essential.
- And most of the hacking is levels 1-3, so make sure you at least get level 3 soon (4 is common mid-late game, 5 is rare).
- Analyse level 1 is good for the getting the hang of hacking.

Capture points;

- IO Port is where you start, usually connected to one or two directories.
- Directories are basically not worth capturing, but will mostly comprise of your main route. Looks like a folder.
- Security node is either one or two red columns, this is where the security program will start if triggered.
- Resource node things. They look like cubes. These are optional (but VERY good) objectives, they give you extra XP, Credits or hacking tools if you obtain them.
- Green objective node. 1-3 of these, they are your objective, capture them all to succeed at hacking.
- Cogs, these are split into;
Spam, slows down security. Transfer, evens out hard capture areas with easy capture areas, and Soften, which makes all surrounding areas easier to capture.

General tips;

- First note how many attempts you have, this is important as failing the first or second attempt on harder security is generally a given.
- Second once in, unless you are rushed because of an outside constraint (such as a guard who may notice you on his patrol), take your time and have a look at what you need to do. The analyse 1 aug is good for this.
- The game teaches you to aim for the Green objective point, and this is good, except that it doesn't paint the whole picture. The REAL objective is actually the Security node, because of this;

1) Green objective point only = Hacking success
2) Green objective + Resource nodes = Hacking success plus that extra resource
3) Security node = Hacking success plus ALL resources (you don't have to actually obtain them in the minigame to get them!)

- So, based on that, see what route is good towards the security node. If he is blocked off, because the only route he has is one way, then you have to go for solution 2.
- You can perform more than one action at one time, usually focus on capture to begin with, but as soon as the security becomes active, fortify all nodes between you and it WHILE continuing to capture.
- If it activates at a low level detection (stealth level 3 is 15%), then generally restart by pressing escape.
- If you are close to capturing the Security node, and it activates, quickly fortify your route and then aim to capture it, you should generally have enough time.
- I got through the game using about 10 nukes and 15 stops, but probably about 25 quick saves for hacking... So you should have plenty of resource, IF you go for the resource nodes.

This will evolve and update over time...

How to hack:

Press as many things as you can and nuke the objective node if you've got 3 seconds to go.
I am dead.
