There is a reason.
The developers used the extension .dx on the maps. It was common language to abbreviate to DX.
(.utx, .umx, .dx etc). Also maps were titled DXMP not DEMP. So it became common abbreviation.
Other communities like Eidos and Facebook though, plenty of people refer to DE1 and DE2...
