I've not really had time to look at this thread, very confused.

Are you comparing a laptop vs netbook and pre-built desktop?

Mix and match here. UK stores at bottom. You can probs get away with 10-70 quid cheaper from that Zoostorm thing, depending on deals. Plus be able to get better parts for it.

If you want a desktop that'll last you 3 years on medium-high settings for videogames and maybe even 6 with a graphics card change down the line (depending on processor importance in future), I recommend you look at the Great and Very Good catagory.

Is there really any difference left between a laptop and notebook?

*netbook - price and portability.

It's easy, just make sure everything is plugged in properly to the PSU and make sure your PSU isn't too old/too weak (that guide should measure).

If you're not confident you can always get an adult, Max.

Max it's easy. I even helped a non-computer savvy 15 year old with it over skype (actually).

Hello.

Mother's birthday, 50th. As one of her plentiful gifts, I want to get her a laptop/notebook because she uses her PC just off her bed so fuck that.

Old specs are my old PC's which was a 2.6ghz singlecore, 5500fx and 1GB ram, I'm sure something even with intergrated gfx would be better than this POS.

Would a simple netbook suffice? Or would she want something with a bit more power?

My mum would be similar, she has a Samsung NC10 and is pretty happy with it.

By watching movies do you mean by DVD, or iTunes?

ITunes?!

DVD player would be optimal. Maybe even a blueray player.

Then you'll need a proper notebook, otherwise it will be lag-central/impossible without an external drive and fuck that.

So that plastic POS Samsung is off the list.

I think I ordered one of those for someone. The mouse pad isn't quite in the middle and the left/right click are one big button which takes a while to get used to, but other than that it's fine.
