USB Transfer speeds?

Anyone know why, when I try to transfer 2.5Gb file to my memory stick, it goes at like 2 meg per sec, but if I try it with a 1.5Gb file, it goes at like 10 meg??
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
