Considering playing FF. Which one to start with?

Firstly, I'm ruling out 1-4. I just can't play games that old.

I'm thinking 7, 6 or 12 for an entry point, as they seem the most approachable, but.... well... every forum I've posted on it's just sparked a fucking argument with no discernable helpful answer.
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

Start with 7.

4, 5, 6, 7, 9, tactics are the only objective must plays.
