Deus Ex Archive V2!

Postby Alex » Sun May 01, 11 6:18 pm

Deus Ex Network is thrilled to announce V2 of their file archive.

The new version is entirely written from scratch with a lot new (technical) features.

File uploading by visitors
Visitors can now upload files themselves. A valid e-mail address is required for this, as we will use it to validate the uploaded files and will also contact you on the e-mail address whether the file is accepted or denied.

Search feature
It is now possible to search within our archive. Not only will it search for the name of the file, but also other things such as file description.

ZIP Indexation
ZIP archive files are now automatically indexed and searchable.
(Example: http://download.deusexnetwork.com/DX1/s ... genda1.zip)
When searching for an individual file (for example DarkForce1.u) it will find all ZIP archives with the file.
(Example: http://www.download.deusexnetwork.com/s ... rkforce1.u)

Besides that, there are a lot of technical - background - changes that allows easier maintenance of both the system and files.

The design of the archive will be reviewed & redone by us later on.

If you find any bugs or errors, be sure to report them!

Note: Existing links to our archive will no longer work, but by using the search feature - which is offered when trying to load an older file - it is easy to find the file.

Made a small adjustment:
If someone tries to load a file that does not exist (such as http://download.deusexnetwork.com/DX1/m ... ker_DM.zip) it will automatically suggest other files that might match his search.

Sure this is written from scratch??? Looks suspiciously like the old one...

The previous one was just a directory list script, this is an entirely different 'cookie' :)

Alex - can I make a suggestion please, I know this might be overkill, but I have two ideas which I believe would be useful for making the Alpha file archive even better.

#1. Ability to edit info for existing downloads:
I think this would be useful. Maybe an ajax thingy, an edit button next to "There is no description available", where users could submit detailed descriptions for files. I know you're God of the file archive so we could have them in a queue to be moderated by yourself, checked for accuracy etc. I really believe this would improve the quality of the archive, especially when searching for the more obscure packages, or obscurely named ones anyway. Just a thought.

#2. User comments for each download:
I know we have the forum but it'd be nice for user comments, maybe to dicuss missing/broken files and/or how to use stuff. Combined knowledge of DX files could enable more people to get more out of existing maps/mods and other stuff. Perhaps overkill, like I said, but I think it may benefit. Although it could just be that #1 would be enough on its own.

Of course, it's easy for me to reel out suggestions but I don't know how difficult it would be to implement these changes, but I'd appreciate your input on these ideas.

Hi Shinobi

Thank you for the suggestions! Any suggestion & comment is more than welcome.

#1. Ability to edit info for existing downloads
I implemented this for file descriptions. Beneath each file description is now a link "update this description". Will possibly replace it with a button later on.

#2. User comments for each download
I'm afraid I'm not going to implement this. With user comments, moderation is also required. People usually discuss files/maps/mods/etc on different websites/forums anyways. I might make a button that users can use to report a malfunctioning file though (like missing dependencies and such).

Okay cool!

I didn't notice the link, sorry. Yes maybe a button would help. For those as amazingly observant as me...

Fair point about comments requiring moderation.... I can see the spam now!
