I use AVG, Spybot - Search & Destroy and Lavasoft's Ad-Aware.

AVG has scheduled scans and I believe Ad-Aware does too, not sure about Spybot though. I don't think it does as I've never been able to.

Eh, well I use Vista so it's a bit harder to come by a decent one. I've used several. Ashampoo Firewall, McAfee Firewall and currently, I'm using COMODO Firewall. It's alright and it works.

If you already have viruses, you should reinstall Windows and THEN start thinking about anti virus softwares :)

Anyway, I go with this combination NOD32 + Spyware Doctor, and my router of course, has a firewall.

Yeah. he's not wrong there. Even if the scanners removed all traces of spyware and viruses you wouldn't be able to tell that.

And question: How did you manage to infect your computer with viruses in the first place?

AVG actually is really good for a free virus scanner. It's pretty small but incredibly simple. I actually believe that there is some free virus/spyware scanners out there that are generally, much better than a lot of professional ones (ones you pay a subscription to use).

To me, most aren't as bulky and are straight to the point.

While Norton didn't find anything, AdAware SE Pro found 726 viruses.

On my laptop I have Zone Alarm

On my main computer I have KasperSky 7 (As Zonealarm doesn't work on 64bit).

Either crack them or pay for them. xD

Get rid of, if you haven't already. It's poison.

For moi:

-Spybot Search & Destroy (Brilliantly effective & free, no excuse!)
-Lavasoft Ad-Aware (Annoyingly limited free version, still effective though)
-Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 (Expensive but IMO the best)

Don't use a personal firewall, as I'm behind a router and never have more than the bare minimum of ports open, also AFAIK UDP ports are less likely to get scanned for by hackers. Besides, my router forwards incoming connections to my old machine (which has XP SP3, always updated, and runs XP firewall), and that in turn forwards to my new machine (which is the one I care about).

If I was to recommend freebies, based on what I've installed on my dad's old PC for him, I'd probably say:

-AVG 8.0 Free Edition (it works, not too much of a resource hog either)
-Spybot
-XP Firewall (or vista I dunno don't use it yet)
-Get behind a firewalled router if ya can, and don't open ports unnecessarily.
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
