Can't launch DeusEx.exe from ftp

Postby ~s0ap~ » Mon Dec 28, 09 4:51 am

I have a FTP server set up with all my files of my dx server and I'm trying to launch it on the server so I can somehow host a server on my router. I do not see a way that I can launch it and google isn't helping me either. Is there a way to launch it on the ftp?

You can't execute an application on the FTP afaik.

Does your router run Windows?

Running .exes on Linux requires Wine:
http://www.winehq.org/

I think it will be very hard to install and configure Wine using FTP (configuring and installing new applications using Wine is already hard!). I don't even know if it is possible. Why don't you host a masterserver in your pc and open the required port?

Do you even know what a router is? It's not for hosting servers...

It allows multiple computers n shit to go on the internet at the same time. If I messed around with custom firmware and the usb port i could get it running

Good luck messing around with the firmware...

Dude if you want to have a masterserver why don't you host it in your pc and open the required port?
Having a masterserver is already pointless but having a masterserver in your router is pointless, risky, and there are 99.99% of chances it isn't going to work, you may lost your router too.

The idea is good but I doubt it's going to work.

It actually is possible. But not just with any router. Just like you can hack a NAS to make it run other programs. But you can't hack just any NAS.

.. my router runs 24/7, my PC doesn't. You shut your router down from time to time?

first of all, you can't run Windows programs (such as Deus Ex) on other operating systems (such as Linux) unless you set up some sort of emulation, and that might be a hard thing to do

secondly, .bat is a Windows batch file, meaning executing it on other operating systems is not possible

thirdly, as far as I know, you can't execute anything over the file transfer protocol (ftp)

fourthly, unless your router was built upon some PC or even a server, it is most likely greatly underpowered (too slow) to run a game server properly

What is the .bat equivalent (if there even is one) of linux?

My point is not whether it's possible or not - in the same way, it'd be possible to install Crysis on my old Windows 95 computer. In both cases however, the point of the exercise is at best questionable
