Can anyone tell me an easy way to change your ip address?
I am connected to ntl broadband and thrtr is a box on top of my computer saying such things as pwr, usb, enet, u/s, d/s, snyc and rdy.
Is this the router. i am not to sure and have never understood what a router is. So, if I don't have a router what else can I do?

You will either have one of two things; A modem or a router.

A modem will have a single cable (Network cable or USB) to your computer, and one to the phone line.

A router will have the same but more then 1 network port.

To change your IP, you need to know what plan you're on; you can find out by asking your ISP. If you are on a dynamic IP plan, your IP changes every time you power down your equipment. (Turn off your modem/router) If it is static, it will always be the same unless you ask your ISP to change it. (There could be fees for this, so beware)

What do you want to change your IP for? If it's just for websites, proxies are good, for all else, they are shite.

Ip Adresses have 4 sets of numbers

1.2.3.4

Well they never thought the internet would be this big...and so this seemd perfect...but bow ip adresses are running out...there is not enough for everyone....so what happens is that now most people on a basic plan with their ISP will have a static ip...this means that there is some ips not being used because not everyone is on the internet at the same time....

So, i guess onl yway to change it is isp?

Thanks guys. And I did that thing of disconnecting it and waited for about 25 minuets, then, put it back in, and nothing happened, so i take it its a static

No. Even though i have dynamic i don't think they do.

there is something else u cant try...

Start > Run > Type CMD in the box > In Command prompt type "ipconfig /release" (this will disconnect you from the internet > Wait 10 mins > then type "ipconfig /renew"

Why wait 10 mins? Theres no need you can do the next step straight away. And if he has a router this won't make a difference as the router will give him the same local IP.

Also, AgentSmyth, you have it backwards; ISP's are using dynamic IP's to help solve the shortage of IP numbers, static IP's can't be reused by other people, where as dynamic can, although the shortage isn't really a shortage, but it will be. However by then, IPv6 will be running fully.
