Anime (NO HOMO)

Postby Hanover Fist » Wed Dec 09, 09 9:40 pm

Recently started getting into this artform, primarily its television shows. When I was a kid I watched shows like DragonBall, Rerouni Kenshin, Big O, Tenchi Muyo (which I fucking hated), Cowboy Bebop, Gundam Wing... and different assorted shows that were on Tsunami.

Since Tsunami went under I haven't watched any anime until recently. Now I'm really getting into Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop as well as FLCL.

Anyone else watch this shit?

I don't want much now, I just watched the "usual" shit when I was young (shit like Digimon, Pokemon, Dragonball Z, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc etc).

Nowadays I probably would delve into anime some more but I don't watch much TV and can't be fucked downloading anything (capped bandwidth + shit speeds is frustratingly annoying).

Take a look at Samurai Champloo and Death Note.

The stuff aired on television are usually commercially viable series aimed at teens; i.e. Dragon Ball, Pokemon etc...

Everyone should watch Akira and Ghost in the Shell and don't treat them as anime because they're both excellent films.

As for me before I nerd out in another hermit day, I watched:
Lovely Complex
Moomins
Eureka Seven
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OVA (1993 and 2001)
Fist of the North Star
All the fucking Evangelions
Break Through Heaven, Gurren Lagann
Aim for the Top, Gunbuster
Space Pirate Captain Harlock (weeeeeeeeeee)
Death Note (FILLER THE ANIME)
Devil May Cry (fucking lame)
Every Dragon Ball, I hate myself for wasting my time with Z and GT
Oddly enough I haven't seen Pokémon that much
DIGIMON DIGITAL MONSTERS DIGIMON ARE THE CHAMPIONS
Flint the Time Detective
Afro Samurai
Black Lagoon
Code Geass LAME
Dragonaut LAME
Elfen Lied LAME GORE
F-Zero GP Legend haahah what the fuck am I watching
Ghost int he Shell Stand alone Complex AWESOME
Lucky Star I'm banning people from the forum for wat-- oh I can't
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Pizza Cats
Akagi
Kaigi
Hunter × Hunter
Dirty Pair Flash
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (infinitely better than the original series unloyal to the source)

off the top of my head

Ghost in the Shell is something I want to watch. I'll probably be a cheap shit and download it.

Ghost in the shell is something Ive always planned on watching. And LOL at Sailor Moon, nobody has evolved into my very personal hero.
To be frank Ive not watched any proper animes from start to finish, Ive seen little bits of this and that, and had to really struggle not to throw up when watching Lucky Star with sister, who apparently was equally repulsed. Im not saying its bad, its actually pretty fun, but were not really into this cute thing. My friend at work has anime mania so I hear about different shit from him. Besides GitS, I had the plan of watching Zetsubou Sensei sometime.

Ive always hated the way animes looked but with passing years Ive become more open-minded. I believe there is some good anime for everyone out there, just need to find your niche.

When I find time I should probably take a peek at james' list there. My friend says I like morbid ass shit, as he put it, so maybe the anime gurus can recommend something

If you want to get the best of anime then you'd definitely need to watch Ghost in the Shell and Akira at the very least.

S.A.C. 2nd GIG was fucking awesome and I'm waiting for it to come out on DVD.

I just don't see the appeal of watching stuff designed for Japanese twelve-year-olds. I don't mind cartoons in general - some are great, but the big watery-eyed Jap drawing style pisses me off.

The japs take it seriously, actually. They aim most of these shows at adults. Not fucking Sailor Moon or Pokemon obviously.

- Edit: Most of the kiddie anime shows are not Japanese.

Oh I just re-read, ah well, no harm in adding shame that they direct girly shows at males.

Pokémon is a kids thing though, oddly enough Sailor Moon falls within the teenage girl thing. :|

Also has anyone seen Airmaster?, I want general thoughts on it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pupheEv0M-k&fmt=18

For me personally anything that looks realistic in terms of proportions and what not is generally acceptable.

I remember the X Men and Spider Man series from the 1990s were incredible in comparison to the basic stuff airing at the time.
