Smoking ban

Postby James » Sun Aug 12, 07 1:26 pm

First of all, I do not smoke.
I am going to keep this brief to leave present smokers to give their own views on this.

I hate this law, smoking is a very horrid horrid thing to me but the fact that most of my friends and people I know are smokers I am really annoyied at the fact now that they have to walk outside to smoke I am left on my OWN every 5 minutes... It is fucking annoying and I can't exactly move because I'd lose my seats, and I will not start smoking because of this and adding onto the former reason.

I also hate the B.O I smell now that the smoke doesn't filter it out anymore. ;_;
I am dead.

The government is shooting themselves in the foot by banning smoking.

They get >2/3 of the cost of a pack as taxes, so stop people smoking, their gravy train gets a spanner in the works... And that money'll have to come back in somehow... Service cuts, anyone?

The smoking ban has been fine in other countries, why should that be different here?

Also, what else could the government realistically do?

Its not about that, they're forcing drunk people outside of the street when they need to smoke, which could cause obvious social conflict with people staring.

I've been used to this smoking ban ever since they banned it in Skokie, Chicago and underlying suburbs. It's really nothing, and it helps remove obnoxious smokers from the restaurants and other public areas. Waiting in a seat for 5 minutes or getting lung cancer? I'd take the first option.

In this thread, more money saved by the NHS, In this thread, more moneys for government.

Meh, doesn't really bother me personally I'm more of a social smoker than anything, so it's not as if I'm restricted to sitting inside with the non-smokers or outside with the regular smokers. I just alternate between the two. Everyone sits outside during summer anyway but it'll be a whole different story come winter time; smokers will be dying to quit lol.

By 'Social Smoker', you smoke when your friends do? Seems to me like its not even an addiction for you, but purely to fit in. Perhaps if that is the case, then you're hanging with the wrong crowd.

Not to fit in at all, I enjoy smoking recreationally, the same goes for weed. I find smoking on my own to be boring and pointless, therefore I don't. I'm not addicted because I'm not a retard.

Hmm, I work in a pub waitering, so this was good in a way I'm less likely to die from lung cancer, but bad in a way that EVERY staff member who works there smokes too.. Meaning I'm left on my own as you described really. Can get boring.

So we're not totally different in our jobs; we both have our heads up things, just that mine are car engines. GG.

I'm lucky enough not to suffer from it anyway, all my alcohol is consumed at some poor guy's house with loud music and half naked chicks getting high with spotty blonde losers with weed. No need for a public house.

Hey!? :? :?

Most places accommodate for the smoking ban, there are smoking areas, for example beer gardens and stuff, and clubs have all their fire exits open and everyone smokes at the doors.

In this thread, more money saved by the NHS, In this thread, more moneys for government.

In this thread, overuse of In this thread in one sentence.

And the money that was spent getting people off of smoking via prescription use of stuff such as nicotine patches? That'd come from somewhere, as some packs can cost upwards of £20 a pop. True, it'd eventually balance itself out, but it seems like it may take a while...

The only "smoking ban" in New Zealand is that you're not allowed to smoke in bars. Smoking hasn't been banned in public/enclosed areas as of yet, but I have no doubts that it'll happen soon.

I, don't smoke. Never have, never will. My father does, but I despise it, it's a disgusting habit IMO. I have nothing against people who do smoke, I just don't like the habit and think that the whole thing should never have started.

IMO, smoking is an evil which could've been prevented. But when it was started, people thought it was the "thing to do" and it was actually good to smoke. And advertising for it wasn't banned. Now, most people know it's bad to smoke and it is illegal to advertise smoking.

Of course, even though there is no smoking ban, if/when I own/rent a house, I'd never let a smoker smoke in the house. You either smoke outside or not at all -- make your choice. Because my father smokes (not that I live with my parents anymore, anyway), my asthma was a lot worse than it is now (and no, it wasn't caused from the smoking, I had it at birth).

Though my opinion, is that their should only be a ban on smoking in certain places. Not neccessarily ALL public places but some. The ban on smoking in public bars in NZ, I like and agree with it. But the smoking ban in all public places I probably wouldn't.
