The Moral High Ground

Postby Mr. Tastix » Sun Jun 15, 08 3:43 pm

I just noticed ("just" being used very loosely), on nearly all warez sites or in any of those NFO files you read when (or if) you download any cracked product it'll say something towards the line of...

If you like this program then buy it!

Now, this really pisses me off. What right does something who makes key generators, cracks programs etc etc, have to tell us to buy a product? Yeah, sure it's both illegal to make keygens and download warez but that's not my point. My point is that I believe cracking a program is worse than downloading it and then you make it even worse by telling us to buy the damn program if we like it!

What's the point in stealing if you're going to eventually buy what you stole? Does buying something your previously stole erase the fact that you stole it prior to buying it? No, if you get caught you'd still get charged with theft, regardless if you bought it after stealing a copy of it.

So how can a cracker just sit there and take the moral high ground by telling us to buy the program they cracked which is also illegal? They may have bought the program but I see no point in buying it if you plan to crack it.

The whole thing seems just pointless and extremely hypocritical to me. Anyone else think differently on this matter then please, go ahead and tell me why. I'd like to know what reason someone could use to justify this.

It is stupid I completly agree with you. They should pay for the program or not. It it like stealing a car, and the going back to the car shop buying the same car again. They tell you that hey are stolen, and then again expect for you to buy it.

Well I bought fraps, then got a new comp, so I downloaded a cracked version. I see this as justified <_<.

You may have originally bought it but then you went and stole it. I'm not going to take the moral high ground here because that'd be hypocritical of me, so I couldn't care less what you do.

I just don't find it justified for the crackers to tell us to go out and buy a program. How can they display morals and ethics? It's utter bullshit.

You expected me to buy it again? xD

And them adding that covers them abit, they could say "Well we asked them to buy it after they tried it, it's up to the user if they did or not".

I find both wrong, sure. But at least we're not hypocritical and telling people to go off and not download the product when we do ourselves. Crackers however crack the program then go and tell people to buy the program.

It's just as illegal to bypass a programs security as it is to download the program.

Ok, the moral high ground. I think it's good that they placed it. What do you think is better?
"Go use this program, and if you like it, then continue using it."
"Go use this program, and if you like it, then buy it and reward the makers!"
I'd go for option two. (That it's better, not that I would do it.. ;))
