Pet peeve: Self-service counters at supermarkets.

Postby Tantalus » Sat Sep 05, 09 4:45 pm

Self-service counters are not for:
Mothers doing weekly shop or mothers in general.
People with eye-sight problems yet do not wear glasses.
The elderly.
People who can't scan a barcode.
" trying to buy kitchen knives.
" " " " pornographic magazines.
Children under the age of 14.
The impatient.
People with loose veg.
" with more than 10 items.

Self-service counters ARE for:
Lonely, hermit-like people who want to buy their ready meal with minimal human contact.
Executive-types that want to buy their sandwiches without dealing with people who are not in suits.
Me.

LET ME BUY MY SAMMICH!!
Signatures are dumb.

Everything about this rant made me lol.

The only time I ever used one was when I bought 500 DVD+R's from Asda once, 'cause I didn't want some cashier thinking I was:

A: Pirating DVD's.
2: Pirating PS2 games.
7: A nerd.
F: Selling them on more expensive at a car boot/yard sale.
457: A nerd.

...even though all but Option F turned out to be true.

Rather than taking all your shopping to a cashier, you scan everything yourself as you take it from the shelves and pay at a machine when you're finished.

What stops you stealing when it's not self service?

Someone usually sits at a desk near them.

Also, they have the weight of the items programmed in. So you can't buy a bike and say it's a pack of marshmallows. :P

I use self-service counters to get rid of change. I normally just pay in 1 and 2 pence coins. Also if you buy something loose eg from the bakery, you can bill it through as a cheaper item

I only use self-service counters if I know it's going to be quicker. Otherwise I really can't be fucked.

I use self-service counters because I just prefer them, I don't like the awkwardness with the random behind the counter when I have nothing to say lol
