This probably gets on a lot of our nerves....

I'm not completely anal about it. However, it can get really annoying.

I just read four posts on a website with one guy who wouldn't talk normally AT ALL.

I think it becomes an issue when kids grow up typing like that. It becomes a habit, and eventually isn't even a conscious thought when at a computer keyboard.

There are quite a few people that type like this....

"Yes, I know what u are talking about, but you cant c that u r doing that all wrong. You're very silly"

-and this REALLY bothers me. Mostly because they know how to spell "you", yet they continue to randomly give up on hitting "y" and "o" sometimes, and fail to bother finishing other simple words.


What is everyone's take on this subject?

Hmm..... my stance has shifted in recent years. I wholeheartedly agree that it is both unhealthy and worrying when kids don't embrace the opportunity to develop a strong command of the English language, yet I know many people (including myself on occasions) who simply just cannot be arsed to type whole words out 100% of the time.

The omission of letters from measly words - as mentioned above - such as "you" or "see" is rather irritating as it's not fucking difficult to spell these properly.

I have other issues which supercede this in importance, personally at least. Being British (Welsh to be specific), I like basking in the glory of having my own native language and my own native version. British English is a totally different language to American English. AMERICAN english. Note the name. This American rehashing of our language is being passed off across the globe as "Universal English" which, in my personal opinion, is wrong. British English came first, and British English should be the one taught to non-native-speaking countries.

If you don't know what I mean, I'm talking about American spellings such as these:

"-Ize" suffix rather than "-ise" (apologise/apologize)
"-Ter" rather than "-tre" (as in centre/center, metre/meter)
Omission of "u" from "colour"

I know English is really just an amalgamation of Anglo-Frisian and germanic/scandinavian dialects, toyed with and tweaked ever since; perhaps English always will be a parasitic melting pot of other nations' ideas?

Anyway, back on topic. Another form of bad english - chiefly prevalent amongst (mainy youth?) internet users - is to knowingly misspell words just "because we can". I will honestly admit I will sumtimes type liek dis too laugh at dem n00b speekerz or wateva. Just because I feel like it, and I see it everywhere.

I once read a book called "The Stories of English" by David Crystal (British linguist and author) which discussed the origins and constant evolution of the language. Also another great book which is rather worrying is "Txtng: The Gr8 Db8" by the same author, which discusses texting language (also seen online much to my dismay!) and its impact on society.

My apologies for the length of this post and going off on a tangent, but language is something that really grips my shit!

EDIT: Before those of you who are anal-kings rip this post apart and pick up on every grammatical or other mistake I've made in this post... I do not claim to have a masterful command of English. I have studied it at A level and read a lot, yet I'm not into going apoplectic over a misspelling or misuse of who/whom etc. That is all.

And yes, I know that the Latin derivative has a silent h but this is fucking English, not Latin. In the same way, we don't say "yustice" or "Yulius", we say "justice" and "Julius". Why not just wipe out j if we're going to go Latin crazy?

I'm not too big a fan of French words slipping in under the radar either, with their damned silent letters!!

Has been irritating me for a while. Most notably of late it pissed me off in Due Date, where Juliette Lewis repeatedly said it.

Seemingly the majority of Americans (in my area) seem to disregard proper grammar as well as literature. Euros can't hop on this to diss cuz every part of the world seems to vary in levels of ignorance depending on how chill their areas are with media and pop culture.

Yeah, and North America is the worst for media, pop-culture, ignorance. I generally find most younger people to mimick the personality of another, and then it becomes a trend COUGHjerseyshoreCOUGH. It's as if most people don't have their own personality.

Enough of my NA ranting though.

Professors that can't acknowledge proper spelling/grammar from students (that care about school e.g. reclaimer) shouldn't be professors at all.

I find it hard to type in English because my English has always been a bit double dutch in class (my English teacher was always Welsh), and the only time I wrote formal English was for coursework and exams. Still, despite only speaking English on the internet, and to one or two people, I have better grammar, and I speak it better than most.

If I didn't natively speak it, I would hate English. It's spelling system doesn't make any sense. Predicting how a word would be spelt (or is it spelled?) is so impossible that there are contest called "Spelling Bees" where you are rewarded for memorizing the ambiguous spellings of words no one uses. Vocabulary is huge, mainly because of synonyms. Verb conjugation is simple but there are many irregular verbs. Also, the alphabet is messed up. There are 3 letters for the same sound (c, k, q) yet there aren't any letters for the sh and ch sounds. Having two sets of letters (uppercase and lowercase) is pointless.

Spanish doesn't have nearly as bad as a spelling problem but the verb conjugation is much more complicated. Japanese would be fine if they got rid of the counters and those goddamn kanji. I hope some day in the future there will be a universal language with simple spelling and verb conjugation.

How to fix the English language:
American English and English English merging, some words on both sides are extremely annoying such as speciality/specialty, artefact/artifact and naïvety/naïveté
Change some words to actually sound how they're spelt. e.g a major offender "bestial" would be much better if it was spelt "beastial".
Swap around the rules of its and it's because of the apostrophe possessive case.

I personally would never have friends that I had to change my personality for. I am who I am, and if people don't accept it, then they can carry on.
