This board was created in 2005 or 2006 by my intention to spark more serious discussion of anything involving news, drama and goings on with lives and the world etc.

I stole the name "Rant Box" from a musician's forums for their community drama, they had another forum called "Serious Talk". I thought of combining the two but keeping the name of the former. A mistake in hindsight.

I think we don't rant enough to warrant the name.

So I ask, should we keep the name as "Rant Box" or change it to "Serious Discussion"?

Alternatively we can bring life to General Discussion:
Merge Rant Box with General Discussion, move General Spam out of General Chat to make the catagory look good.

I'm personally happy with the layout atm. Rant box for serious discussion, general for less serious, and spam for spam.

I voted keep the name as I quite like rant box, or more, I dislike the name "serious discussion". I'm fine with it being changed though so my vote is split between 1 & 2.

Keep it as the same, it's where people rant and be serious.

To be honest, general chat isn't that much serious business and shouldn't be, because no one is serious 'generally'.. it's better to be separated

The general sections are as sparse as their names imply. Shit's almost too literally relevant to itself.

I like serious discussion, particularly because not every topic in the rant box is an actual (ie angry post) rant.

Still pretty even and that means of course Rant Box is most likely at the moment, but please read this quote again I've edited.

Change to Serious Discussion.

Edit the rules.

- No "y u taek internets so srs?" comments

- Ranting is also acceptable in this area.

I think it's a good idea to expand the purport of this forum, but it shouldn't be called "Serious discussion" because it somewhat implies that the rest of the forum is just for laughs and giggles I'm not strongly against it though.

I see your point, maybe serious discussion isn't the best name,

"The one place people will get warned for spamming SC2 videos"

To be fair, the top two were 50:50, while this means the original would be likely to stay, Dae chose to meet both ways.

Just to be a semantic asshole, isn't a debate very different from serious discussion though?

I thought discussions were like "Hey, let's discuss", while debates are like "HEY I'LL TELL YOU WHY YOU'RE WRONG". Is it like that? Or is it just my mind being clouded by the way people 'debate' in politics?

Debates are usually disagreements on more than one side.


Discussions are usually sharing information, and talking about common interests. Most conversations start as discussions (I would hope to god).



However, It can always go this route...

Discussion > Debate > Heated Debate (as Clix said. Politics) > Ranting [= Bitching]

If it goes downhill enough, that's when the ranting comes into place. Mindless bitching where nobody really proves a point, etc.
