[newb question] Can mp3s be convereted to in-game music for Deus Ex?

Looks like it's time for another basic question from myself.

Can mp3s be used or converted to in-game music for Deus Ex?

For example, could I set this file as the combat music for a level? ;) j/k

http://rapidshare.com/files/57601393/Ki ... u.mp3.html

If so, how could I go about doing that? Would I need any software besides for the SDK?

Thanks a whole lot for your help.

There are a lot of mods where people have custom music which they have composed themselves. I wonder if there's any way to ask those people who they got custom music into their mod.

... Anyway, here is the mod:
http://download.dxalpha.co.uk/DX1/editing/vsddx.rar

It allows using MP3, OGG, MID, etc in DeusEx.

That mod is the best choice if you're making a singleplayer map / mod.

I might be a little off-track, here, but I've actually done the same by... oh wait, no I haven't.

I once created a map which was just a couple of gigantic glass balls, and I packed some mp3's of myself making strange whispering sounds into shinsweirdsounds.uax, and then added them as ambientsound actors lol.

Then I used firetemple as the map's music.

Scared the bejesus outta me, anyway!!

I don't know if you can do that for music files... probably not.

I'm gonna try that mod, too.

So anyway... problem solved I think. I just latched on like a leetch and stole ur answers!

PS: (excuse me today, waaaay too much coffee)

To use the music as an ambient sound, you'd have to convert it to a .wav.

Either kiss quality goodbye, or suffer ((Music length in minutes x 0.85) x 5)mb of download. That's what it'd be, on a bitrate that didn't make it sound tinny as hell.

Indeed, MP3 can be converted to UMX, but UMX's size will be too large. For example song in MP3 takes about 4 Mbytes, in UMX -- about 20 MBytes!

Not in my experience. Then again, I use .mp3 -> .wav -> .it -> .umx conversion :)

^^ -- sounds like it would help a bit.

I have done this for some of my maps, it works great.

^^ I ain't seen any of your maps.... Email 'em, I'll host.

Anyhoo - tack's music tutorial is about creating your own .umx files, and I think he discusses midi n stuff in general, but not much bout mp3 conversion if I remember rightly.

I didn't have full songs, only clips. And the ambientsound of me didn't really need much quality.

With Nephthys web download I managed to get one of my umx files to download in about 3 mins.

Not rly that good tho is it =/

Heh - true.

I still can't thank you enough for ya Web Support tutorial, though.

If ya don't mind, would you accept some teeny little edits I thought of to make it a little simpler to follow? It's just a lot of people (e.g. me, lol) want everything prettied up with bulletpoints and solid, easy to follow numbered steps.

Not criticising ya, though, it was still a good tutorial.

Hmm...does it work backwards? E.g. umx to mp3?

Possible, I think.

But you need something like WavePad, or some other specialist sound editing tool. Or save the output song as a .wav, if possible.

How to use VSDDX :

1. Copy all files from archive into DeusEx\System\
2. Add VSDDX to EditPackages (EditPackages=VSDDX)
3. Add actor named MusicControl to map (located in Actor >> SoundPlayer)
4. Open MusicControl properies and in SongFile specify filename of your MP3 file.

Note: Your MP3 file must be in DeusEx\MUSIC\

You should distribute with your map these files:
fmodex.DLL -> /DeusEx/System
VSDDX.DLL -> /DeusEx/System
VSDDX.U -> /DeusEx/System
Your mp3 -> /DeusEx/Music

I haven't read the topic past this post, But You should check on the DXMS forum.. There's a tutorial on converting music.. If you don't have time for that, you could send it to me, and I could convert it for you.

Possible, I think.

You need WavePad, ModPlug, and Modplayer.. Or at least that's what I use.

ModPlug Player is only used for playback, not for conversion. It will play .umx files directly if you try to load them, which is good :)

It was my first guide, so it's probs got one or two problems. Can you access the KB? I still can't. PM me any ideas you have to improve it of-course!

Right - an update on me "adding rubbish music to my rubbish maps" escapades...

I@ve just added a very badly edited version of a Metallica song to my AlterWorld map (which is an unfinished portal map thing I sorta gaqve up on coz it was crap)....
It works perfectly.

....'cept the UMX file is 70Mb. Yeesh.

Altho - if ya have Nephthys Client it's a 52Mb .rar file hosted on a fast server :-)

Gonna put some of my original compositions on soon.... well they ain't compositions per se, coz I use sample-based arrangement softwatre (MAGIX Music Maker) to make some moozak, then convert it to MP3, then .wav, .it, .umx.

Anyhoo for those of you with Nephthys I'll be hosting a server called "ZOMG Heavy Metal Music" just for giggles.
