in the editor, what are those apples for?

My guess is that it affects pawns 'wandering' paths but am not sure.

They are path markers, yes.

They are portrayed as the playerpawn's path in which they eat food along the way to guide them towards their destination. (e.g. trail of breadcrumbs, etc.)
