Just an idea, probably stupid.

Since my clan appears to be a bit dead, and so does DXMP in general... well, I thought that maybe the idea below may be interesting. In hindsight it's probably just useless overkill, but I dunno... I think it has potential... am I right/wrong?

The idea...

To create an impartial (i.e. not linked with any clan) website/forum environment for clans to get together and arrange clanwars/alliances/post news etc. I suppose this is already done on individual clan forums and here at [A], but wouldn't it be nice to have a website devoted to inter-clan stuff?

I was thinking of chucking together a vwar-based site. For those of you who don't know, vwar is a highly popular clan/team management site, consisting of clanwar page (with results and loadsa info), custom teams, player profiles etc. Also I wanted the site to have a masterserver page, but Alex has created something better than I could ever do, so forget that bit.

vWar has news pages, RSS feeds (could be useful for enthusiastic players to subscribe to their clan/fav clan's RSS war results, or RSS news articles feed.

I was also thinking of either a forum, or a scripted classifieds page, where clans could advertise: either recruiting new players, or looking for mappers/modders.

I dont think anyone will bother to be honest. Going through all the trouble for perhaps 2 active clans is nothing but a waste of time, although you learn from it. DXMP probably has an average of one war per month anyway overall. For individual clans it may well be one war in every 3 or even 4 months, if they are not short-lived.

Ive used vwar before and I failed to find a way to use it as a tournament system/handler which would essentially require same qualities as what you are suggesting.

Why bother? Just another waste people try to make games better.

But some of it does make a bit of sence, and makes it easier for the community. But it's a waste of time really if you think about it.

If somebody wanted to have a clan war with another clan, they should know their forum, but if they don't have a forum... That clan has some communication problems with the outside

The idea of a "neutral forum" comes up every 3 months, each time it is brought by someone new. I've heard it many times, and many attempts have been made with no success.

The problem lies in the institute of clans which isn't well-developed in our community, mainly due to its size. The bigger a community is, the more people feel a necessity to form subcommunities, and stronger those subcommunities are.

It's not the only reason, though, and I can name many. For example, since there aren't many popular public servers, clan mates meet every day and they don't need to have a planned match to play together.

The idea of a "clanwar management site" is good (and it sounds better than starting another forum), but it won't help the situation in the community with the clanwars. The changes have to be made from "below", not from "above" (dunno how to say it better)...

In other words, if clans actually wanted to war, such website would be made, not vice versa.

I see what ya mean. There's no point having a select few enthusiastic "big guys", if there are no enthusiastic "little guys".... no soliders = no need for a general, right?

It was just an idea. But I see what you guys are saying... there's just no call for it.

I suppose the death of DXMP is imminent.

The imminent death of DXMP has been "imminent" for 2 years. Just make a new clan shinobi, or join an existing one. You will feel much more positive and not have to worry about it anymore.

I'm not bothered about my clan dying... they're not technically dead, it's just there is a distinct lack of fresh blood joining these days, and with my recent absence, 2 members have quit the clan (and DXMP I think).

The only people ever wishing to join have been multiclanners, or [DX-ST] people trying to clear their names lol.

I think the [A] site is already the main, well-established staple of the DXMP community, so... idea abandoned. It's always good to bounce ideas off eachother tho?

And Rob, I see what ya mean mate, but I like this community a lot, and it will be a shame when it dies for good. The game's not brilliant, but there's a "feel" about DXMP which is quite enjoyable, in a geeky kinda way.

You really need to stop adding that sentence to your posts like it means something. It just pisses us players off who we have played this game longer. Its death was imminent perhaps like 3 years after its release imo or even less.

I liked DXFactory as "neutral forums", but due to certain people/admins there I stopped visiting it. I wasnt surprised to see it dead, when I remembered that community like 2 days ago.

Right, but I'd say more, in 2003 it was #1 subject on the most of popular forums, and noone could imagine that in 5 years the community would be still alive.

There is a plenty of newcomers, but they don't come to the forums right after they start playing the game. I'm sure some of them would appreciate joining a clan, which would help them overcome typical obstacles of beginners gameplay, but I think they're waiting till someone invites them.

Fair point. I remember when I first joined, it was actually pretty like "whoa, I'm in out of my depth" coz DXMP seemed to be full of "pro" players who hate newcomers.

Dae, what were you on about waiting a month or so.... something about changing DXMP?

I love this game and the jokin around on forums (which can sometimes get me in trouble) and yes we have fewer players, but as long as we have a few new guys coming along then its all ok.

But seriously shinobi, you will have much more to do if u join a clan, you wont worry about all this as much.

And like dae says, people shopuld welcome new players. I would be happy to take a new player into {17}, and have done twice to some reasonable success. They develop quickly once in a clan.

Yes, it's always good to take new players under our wings. Not classing myself as a seasoned player or anything near a pro, but I know my way around the game, and I do my best to help newbies. Depending on what mood I'm in tho, lol.

I've no need to join a clan, as I'm not the only leader of FTF. It's a joint 50/50 thing with [FTF]Chameleon (he hosts Destiny's End), and we've agreed to stick it out. It's fun having a clan, and because of the small size of the community thins tend not to get too serious. It's just a bit of fun to me, but like I said - I am quite attached to the game.

Anyhoo - I just added 256Mb RAM to my wonderful powerhouse of a computer (not), gonna go play, see if it's made a difference for hosting/playing simultaneously.

I think the game may be considered dead the moment something new is released and the main focus shifts, while you may still have considerable community for years to come. I played some :ET and even though it has.. perhaps 10, perhaps 100 times the servers DXMP has, it as well is considered dead. Even something similar to our ATDM/0a situation, where most :ET players consider the game dead because some fun game mods have taken over. Naturally the focus within :ET has shifted to the Quake Wars, even though :ET remains free.
The part, where it was obvious that this game as multiplayer was either a development failure or, much more likely, a bone thrown to the GOTY community, did not help either.

So we have come to a point (perhaps ages ago) where competitive gaming is rare and anyone good is automatically labeled as cheater. To a point where FunLine type maps dominate and cater for a community of 12yearolds. Because ATDM is exactly what it says: advanced, it is more likely to give you an enjoyable game, as the new players often avoid getting mercilessly slaughtered.

I dont complain how the game is dead, but I am sad to see no concentrated effort, or very small effort, from the community to build something amazing even given the limitations. There obviously have been different attempts at that, and there are players skilled in modding, unlike me, yet..
The MultiDX was great idea, but remained very unfurnished and with nobody hosting it the mod is as good as dead.

AG kind of reminds me the MMOs. Medics got nerfed, new flying saucers implemented, the similarity is hilarious AG may well be one of the main accomplishments this community can be proud of, along with MTL and the very confusing set of CRD fixes Alex released, even if he originally refused to develop a block to the funbot.

Agreed. Dead in the wider scale of things, still regarded as very much alive within the community.
