Deus Ex Linux Community is a forum set up and managed by myself and others. Our aim is to provide Linux users with assistance with Deus Ex. We also hope to show users the benefits of running and hosting Deus Ex and its servers on Linux instead of Windows.

I would appreciate it if Dejavu, Darkknight, Nobody, JimBowen and the MTL Team register specifically

So far as I can tell, Linux is less system resource hogging than Windows, so a better amount of your system specs can go into hosting a server/some servers.

But I dunno... (Drinks more Bacardi Breezer...)

So uh ... I know I'm an idiot for asking this, but 3 questions:

1) What's the benefit converting from Windows to Linux?
2) Is it possible to convert from Windows to Linux using only software?
3) If so, is it a big time change?

1) There are many reaons why I choose Linux over Windows, the top among them is security and flexability. I love the freedom it gives me to develop, and things just make sense. If they don't, I can change them, and then make my changes available to people who agree with me.

The Register did an interesting study on security, which I feel people should read.

Also, for a wider look at Linux, and the idea's behind it, have a look at wikipeida.

2) I'm assuming you're asking "Do I need to buy new hardware to run Linux?". The answer to that, is yes and no. Yes if you want Linux on it's own hardrive, no if you're okay with sharing hdd space.

3) Switching to Linux will always be a big change, however some distro's ease the pain, Ubuntu being the best of the bunch, imo.

If any one wants to test out Linux, I suggest getting the Ubuntu CD from here, boot from it, and watch it fire up. It won't wipe your system or anything like that, it runs totally off the CD unless you tell it to install.

I might consider switching to Linux sometime later (when I graduate from College, perhaps) :D

Goddard:
It's LINUX, I repeat, LIN-UX!

Don't make me hunt you down and hurt you.
(Seriously.)

Fatman:
Yes and no.

Linux does not use as many resources as Windows does, and native games on Linux tend to follow suit. Generally speaking, if you run a game through wine, it'll be about the same as windows.

jesus:
You can download Linux from one of the thousands of mirrons, it's 100% free in every meaning of the word.

Are drivers for the hardware easily found of do you have to search the internet for them.
Also are these drivers as compatable as the same driver for windows.
(Will the Hardware work as well?)

Most Linux distro's released in the last 12 months support pretty much all the modern hardware.

The hardest thing to install is the video drivers, but there are countless sites that give you step by steps.

In every way it's possible.

Welcome to the world of Linux. Linux is free and community supported.I had an old 400mhz with windows installed, only trouble was windows didnt pick up my sound card, so i installed Linux and had it running in no time. Linux isnt like Windows, Linux retains the meaning and use of a computer rather than just going everywhere in GUI

I've used Unbuntu, well I own a CD. But I never got round to getting Wine... The only problem with Linux is that it's not as flexible as Windows. Hence why you need a Windows Emulator to run Windows Programs (hence the making of "Wine").

Though, with this forum, I'll probably install Linux again and give it another shot.

Its not an emulator, it implents the needed Windows API's into Linux, thus making it faster than Windows. Linux is more flexible than Windows, it is open source.

We have managed to get Deus Ex running in server mode Stable. Running much nicer than Windows servers might I say.

Check out the updated tutorial, its easier than ever.

The fact that any Windows programs can run under Linux shows how many talented programmers work on Wine Development.

Or, how many people work on it with no social life XD

Nah, just joking. It's great to see that people have bothered to make a means of opening Windows only programs on a non-Windows OS.

After all, the original DOS was bought by the MS team..

70% of servers on the net are hosted on Linux.

Linux is also used on supercomputers

How will Linux benefit the people playing on the server, will there be any difference or the exact same?
