Nearly a year on.. attacks continue, thanks for the help GS!
Posted: Mon Mar 19, 07 9:24 pmIt's nearly a year since attacks started and since the first exploit, it's gotten from bad to worse.
Myself, Dae, Zora,Clix, along with a few others, have been trying to improve the situation, but things are getting pretty dreary now.
Unfortuantely, Nephthys can no longer protect us, for the sole fact, it is only server based, the attacks no longer being just server related, but now Masterserver related..
For those who are in the dark about why they can't host, there are two reasons.
1.Your ip, individually, has been targeted, so that packets are being sent to the Ganespy masterserver, telling it that it is offline, so therefore the server is being delisted
2.The masterserver as a whole is being attacked too, so it is increasingly difficult for your server to be seen
Had it been that only no 1 was being incorpated, then not as many people would be suffering, nor would the gs msl look so grim. However, it is both 1 and 2 that is being carried out, together making your server seen seldom, or not at all.
If you had dynamic then you could get away with no 1, but seeing as no 2 is also being taken on board, this is not possible.
We can blame Gamespy for the current difficulties.. it is only their Masterserver that is vulnerable, the only one using the packets, dxmtl and the GODe masterserver(DarkKnightKilla13s) are not vulernable.
However, seeing as Gamespy is the default ms, this is of little use to us, with not enough people knowing about the other two, for things to be the way they used to be, before the attacks.
Like I said, myself and others are working on doing something about it, but Gamespy at the moment is the route of all our problems, at this moment in time, we are waiting for confirmation from a guy at Gamespy, but little or no co-operation( with all the co-Operation from us) is putting us in a place of difficulty.
There could be a fix, but because of Gamespy, it is not being allowed, with the chance if it is used, being used by Gamespy as an excuse, for refusing to help.
The problem is, they aren't helping much at the moment anyway, so soon, we may have to go agaisnt their wishes.
As highlighted at the start, this is why you can't host on Gamespy, with sucess. In the coming months, hopefully the situation will get better.. but until then, I think we must all think, inside and outside of the box.
Hopefully, this topic will arise discussion about this stalemate situation, that we have found ourselves in and get people talking about it again.

*Note: If you haven't hosted in a long time i.e the last four months, then do not attempt to host 0aug. Please host augged, for your server to remain on the Gamespy list. Otherwise, your ip will be individually blocked as explained at the top of this post, with very little traffic coming into your server thereafter. My advice is to host, atdm/btdm until advised what to do.. you will be updated on the situation as it comes.
