AMD

I don't really have any experience with AMD.

Would you recommend their chipset/processors?

Why?/Why Not?

<s>ATI</s> AMD makes great graphics cards, and their processors are also pretty cool. Cheaper than Intel's, you can get a sixcore for the price of an Intel i5.

AMD make the best price/performance shit in my opinion. Ever since the 3800 series of graphics cards and Phenom CPU's they have jumped right back into the game

Why would you not just get a 6850X2

Cheaper than buying two
Allows for more expansion slots
More efficient than actual crossfire

etc etc etc

AMD as Protocol said is best value for money when it comes to processors, sure Intel may have better performing processors (when you compare them on an equal level) but the price difference simply isn't worth it. Additionally as Protocol said - always best getting the 'best' single GPU you can, gives you more flexibilty to upgrade in the future with ease.

As for graphics cards I personally really can't say much as I have primarily experience with Nvidia, I don't stay too up to date with the AMD/ATi chipsets.

I can't believe people are saying ATI/AMD have dodgy drivers still, they haven't done major hiccups since 3000 series and pretty much better software behind it since the 5000 series compared to nvidia's forced gimmick features.

It's funny when you realise for Nvidia, you're also paying for the features such as 3d/Nvidiavision, whenever you like it or not

That might be the rest of your computer. I had 6 graphics cards in the space of 3 years, 3/6 of them had driver issues (although one was a hardware fault.) I still to this day have no idea what fucked those up but yeah, shit happens sometimes. Correlation =/= Causation and all that

Thanks a lot for the help everyone.. because I was thinking.. Why bother spending tons of money on intel CPU's when I can get a cheap AMD that performs great as well (and doesn't have a recall  granted AMD had the Phenom X4 - 1 bug haha).

I'm just distraught with whether or not I should switch to AMD for a gaming rig. I'll probably stick with intel though.

Also, I want 3D enabled James  Which is fine in this circumstance, because it IS something I want, so I'm paying the price anyway.

That's amazing though.. $238.99 CAD for a six core where as intel's first gen i7 costs a bit more than $1000. Crazy world. However, the Phenom X6 does not have a hyperthreading equivalent?

I do love nvidia. So I suppose this would be an issue with switching to AMD.

You won't need the hyperthreading. Trust me.

The only people that need hyperthreading are those that deal with a lot of heavy-duty rendering or processing (i.e. Adobe Premiere).

ATI has been pretty stable with the Catalyst suite, a couple crashes here and there but it's no biggie as it always recovers. My old Nvidia card had blue screens when it crashed, and it was just plain annoying.

Even regardless of hyperthreading,
I would prefer to have zero to minimal crashes :S I might just wait for april, and stick with intel.

Wow really eh? That's effing smart. Not to mention that it's the same price as intel's 1st gen 6 core, and it is an actual true 12 core, and not "we're gonna trick our processor!".

The problem is though, is that I'm a nvidia fanny.. and this goes against my grain. Also, I do NOT want my PC to crap out on me :/

I love playing games in 3d, and I love the performance of nvidia gpu's. I know it's possible with ATI, but at the same token, nvidia's is so much more simplified. Not to mention that any 3d monitor will come bundled with nvidia 3d vision kit :D

-and yes I lol'd at that haha

AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition?

or

AMD Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition?

or

AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition?

Might seem like a stupid question, but I'm totally new to this. (console gamer lol)

965 or 955 are good. I've never used an AMD processor however.

As listed in this guide try to avoid the hexagon if it's a gaming machine and just get the i5/i7 if you can splash out for that much.

A great processor, by the way. Three out of five of my C4D friends have the exact same.

Yeah, you can't go wrong with AMD. You just have to find the CPU that best suits yoir needs (such as any brand or model).
