It was a much different gameplay experience to your standard FPS.
It didn't follow the Wolfenstein/Doom/Quake model (encounter, react, shoot, replenish health)
It didn't follow the Goldeneye/Perfect Dark model (stealth, encounter, shoot first, no requirement for health replenishment (unless you cannot take the enemies down before they shoot at you))
It didn't follow the Halo model (encounter, react, shoot, shield replenishes automatically)
It didn't follow the Call of Duty/Battlefield/Cover based shooter model (encounter, react, hide, shoot, hide, shoot, health replenishment)
Metroid Prime is (encounter, observe, if defensive, prepare and shoot, if offensive react and shoot, health replenishment as reward)
The main point is observation, most FPS's are "shoot the head", Metroid is "if you don't scan, you won't know the best way to take this thing down".
And Goldeneye/Perfect Dark are both 10/10 console FPS's
