Easily THE console game of 2010

Image

The game opens with a prologue during the summer of 2049 during which it is, unusually, snowing. In a modern but dilapidated-looking city, a silver-haired man fends off attacks from ethereal monsters in and around a broken-down grocery store where he is sheltering with his sick daughter, Yonah. Having defeated the last of the monsters, he checks on Yonah, who has begun to cough much worse than before. The man then realizes that Yonah has activated the magical book they carried, against his wishes. Realising this may be fatal for her, he calls out for help, but to no avail.

The game then cuts to 1,312 years later, where the player sees what appears to be the same two characters—the man, named Nier, and his sick daughter Yonah

Let that just sink in a second.

The game is one of those adventure games that have came out recently that play like Zelda but better. (e.g. Darksiders) NIER keeps it fresh and the gameplay is different throughout.

The game has a phenomenal soundtrack, quite possibly the best OST in entire gaming history.

Seriously if you can get it, it's like $8 dollars or £5 because it didn't sell and the company went bust. Expect an amazing game with quite good gameplay (not great), a great story and one of the better Japanese to English translations. There's 40ish hours of gameplay in this, and expect the story to ruin your day at the end.

This is the intro of the game by the way:

Plus a tranny is one of the major characters.

The graphics are awful.

But there's something quite amiss here...

console game

NIER is seriously so fucking underrated and special, Hell, the relationship between dadass Nier and his talking magical book sidekick Grimoire Wiess (who is dapper as fuck) is brilliant.

Hey someone who has played it!

Depressing game isn't it the second time through the second half, the motives make you feel guilty.

Played it after you posted this, actually. I'm glad I did.

Was surprisingly satisfied with ending A, and as soon as I learned there were more I was consciously like "No just stop there.". Yeah it's much more depressing after.

Did you bother with endings C and D?, a lot of grinding for them but I consider C the best ending.

I'm going to post a thread on Drakengard in a minute, the polar opposite of NIER, but it explains the connection between the games.

In short, magic from a fantasy world of not-Earth involving an apocalypse in not-Spain with magic that somehow gets to our Earth (read: magicless) causes apocalypse for our world due to...allergies?

For anyone who has completed the game once and is planning to take new game, short series of Kainé's backstory, I'm not sure they're detailed in full in game:

Also additional reading for anyone who has completed the game and got the first ending:

[spoiler]The backstory that bridges Drakengard to NIER, it was also a base draft for the prequel that we'll never see

OSV: How did you go about developing these languages, and how many did you end up creating? Do the words actually have meaning to you and the rest of the team?

Evans: MoNACA would send me very rough arrangements of the songs, 1,2 or 3 at a time, with instructions of what sort of language they wanted me to write in. For example “Kaine,” they asked me write in a Gaelic sounding language, “The Wretched Automatons” in futuristic English and “Grandma” in futuristic French.

Altogether I wrote songs in 8 languages based on Gaelic, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French, English and Japanese. I would find clips of language lessons for the required psuedo-language on the Internet and then just listen over and over to get the sounds and rhythms into my head and also try writing down passages in the language too in the hope I could absorb something extra. Then it was just a matter of trying to imitate the flow and fit similar sounds around the melody.
I am dead.

Square Enix still promote this game (concert end of the month) quite a bit. Seems they haven't gave up on the possibility of a sequel.
