Alienware M15x

SO. I've decided to buy a modern PC. What I've been looking at are laptops. Why? Well I'm going to need it when I'm off to school next year. However, I wanted to get an insane one that is decently priced.



So I customized it, and it came to CAD$2194.46 (With Tax Included).

This specific model I configured was a 15" (the 17" was an extra $400 :/). It's a Core i7, Windows 7 Ultimate, with 512Mb Nvidia graphics card, 6Gb DDR3 Ram, and 500Gb HDD. I can't remember the exact specs I was just customizing it to see, and then exited the page =P

Anyways.. I "got" the Alienware mouse with it, 360 USB controller, Norton 2009 3 year plan, and a couple other things.

It's quite the investment, but I'm willing to wait if it's worth it. So far, it's looking quite promising from the reviews of others, and their experiences.

What do you guys think?

Very good point I don't mind the weight.. but with the battery power, I might as well just off myself.

remember though.. the 1 hour battery life was with the M17X, and that was running all settings optimized for maximum performance, not to mention it was decked out with "The Best" inside of it :/

I might as well just buy a mac and install windows 7 on it?

ibuypower is alright too though..

Build yourself a gaming PC (Man the fuck up, it takes an hour at most and once you do it once it will only take you 30 mins tops. It's just expensive lego)

Buy a Toshiba Satellite E105-S1602 or a Macbook (overpriced, but I'm not going to disagree with the build quality.) of some kind.

Any other is just too much money for what it is. Get it second hand also, $999 is not acceptable money.

Get a netbook with a 11" Screen.

Just because you are going to uni doesn't mean everything you own now must be portable. Believe it or not PC's can go in suitcases. You won't be playing games in the library or in your lectures, you will be taking notes. A netbook is sufficient for such tasks.

I was actually looking at Macbooks before gaming laptops.

I'll just pirate and install windows 7 on a macbook pro If I want to game, etc.

Look on youtube. There's people playing L4D on their macbook pro's on win7 in Max settings at just about 60fps, and Crysis in medium settings at around 30fps.

I'm not complaining about the 7 hour battery life aswell..

Alright.. Decision has been made. 13" Macbook Pro.

Apple make pretentious pieces of crap, the Ipod was good, don't get me wrong, it was revolutionary for it's time, but technology has moved on, Itunes is a JOKE, Macbook's are SHIT, Mac OSX is shit, the Iphone was made by a bunch of arty farty idiot faces sitting in a tent thinking about how much crap they can put on a phone.

I would happily get an Iphone, smash it with a hammer, and say "do you have an app for that?"

Get a netbook, with windows XP, or if you can spend the money, a powerful netbook with windows 7.

MacBooks do not offer some superb processing power compared to the laptops of similar specs — don't listen to Mac fanboys on YouTube. But they're very beautiful & comfortable to use, they have very nice displays (although glossy), good battery and truly the most advanced consumer OS in the world.

Don't pick MB466 or MB467 (< model numbers), they were from the first model line of unibody 13" MacBooks. That "generation" had numerous issues, including overheating and weak batteries, but all of them were fixed in the newer models which are sold now in Apple Stores. So if you plan to buy e.g. on eBay be careful, google the model number for reviews.

Personally, despite using Mac OS X as a primary desktop system, a year ago, when I was choosing a laptop for studying needs, I chose ASUS Eee PC. I'm still happy with it, I carry and use it every day. In my country it was ~three times cheaper than the lowest end MacBook Air, as well had better battery and the same weight. Of course Atom processor and integrated GPU is nothing like Core2 Duo and 9400M on Air, but I don't need much processing in the university. Now the situation on the market has probably changed, but my idea is — the more universal is the gadget, the more you sacrifice.

Nope, I'm sorry but you can get ALL that style and the same comfort from the Asus Eee 1008HA. I've got one, 10.5 hours battery life (no joke), beautiful and just as functional as any notebook.

It's not as functional as any notebook just because it's on Atom and an integrated videocard. Compared to a MacBook, you don't get a C2D/good GPU/SSD, LED display with excellent colors, neat touchpad.

I'd rather choose a slower OS (next time, because I also have to use Ubuntu on my Eee) than manually patch kernel to make it work with both Wacom & 4G modem, and having to work with outdated & buggy software such as OpenOffice and Gimp.

Why not just torrent windows 7 and reformat the hard drive to install it? ?

I'm aware of what the Eee PC is.. but I've never pictured myself using one The screen isn't very big.. and I'm not too thrilled about the atom :/
