Buzz, wrong.

FFXI uses jobs, not 'character levels'. This is important, because instead of having to make a new character (and thus think up some not already taken name) every time you feel like a change of pace, you just switch jobs. And you're not about to get 750+ levels any time soon, considering how hard it gets to level.
(Getting to level 60 in FFXI is fscking hard without help, and it's impossible to break your level cap without help.)

Skills just control how well you can use your weapon/magic.

Besides, everyone wants a bit of Mithra action...

Edit: Level cap is 75 for each job, my highest is a level 52 Warrior, and I like swords!

Skills / jobs, aaaaall the same.
If you think about it, it IS your character that you're leveling in to get all that.
You can also level up professions in World Of Warcraft that acts as PROPER jobs (such as tailoring, alchemy, cooking, first aid, blacksmithing and etc).
