I bought a first console in my life. After a week of reading countless amount of topics, articles, comparison charts and asking friends, I bought a PS3.

I've chosen PS3 over Xbox360 because:

• XBox360 has a higher chance of breaking, and Microsoft doesn't have a repair service in my city — only in Moscow. Sony has many repair services here.
• I don't intend to play multiplayer on PS3 and it won't be connected to the internet (the internet is unavailable in the place where it will stay soon). XBox360 is advantegeous in terms of online support, and some multiplayer games are less laggy on XBox360 than PS3.
• It has Blu-ray (we all know HD-DVD format used in XBox has lost the format war, not to mention that HD-DVDs weren't sold here at all).
• I can easily install Linux Ubuntu on it. This may not be an advantage for someone — but for me it is, plus I'm familiar with Ubuntu.
• It is more elegant, and a Sony console looks better under a Sony HDTV, which we bought a few months ago.
• It supports 1080p, XBox360 only supports 1080i (twice less than 1080p), although I have no idea will fps will be as good in all modern games on 1080p. I guess this is an advantage for watching films.
• Seeing its my first console, you can imagine how hard it is to me to use a controller. PS3 has a little better mouse/keyboard support, although for the majority of games I need an adapter.

PS3 was released ~1,5 years ago while it takes 2 years to develop a decent game, no wonder there aren't many games ported to it. The ported ones perform worse than on XBox360 because they weren't sharpened to the console's hardware. I'm not a diehard gamer, and I can even stick to one game for many years =)

In other words, I've chosen PS3 because I needed a Blu-ray player, other OS feature and a fast, hassle-free repairing in case it breaks (sending XBox360 to Moscow could take at least 1,5 months). At the same time, the advantages, such as the amount of released games, XBox360 Live, better multiplayer, etc. weren't so weighty for me as the aforementioned.

So, if I was a more of a gamer and I didn't live in Russia, I'd certainly choose XBox360.

Questions:
— I had to buy 40GB PS3 because the 60GB / 80 GB version weren't sold in my city at all. As stated in Wikipedia, mine doesn't have a backwards compatibility (even software). Is it possible to enable this feature anyhow?
— Is buying games through the internet any cheaper?
— Would you recommend me to keep practicing with the controller, or buy an adapter for mouse/keyboard for the FPS?
— What games for PS3 would you recommend to buy now? (got CoD4, The Orange Box, NFS ProStreet, will get GT5 and GTA4 when they're out). Is Burnout Paradise a worthy game?

Without hacking, I guess not.

Internet games are cheaper, make sure they work with your region. From what I understand however, developers are lazy so they make each copy universal by filling up the blu ray disc with languages.

Try the controller, although definitely harder in some terms it does have its advantages to the keyboard for those that don't rely on point and clicking such as a FPS. Also you'll notice using the controller, it is a lot more fair in competitive play as you all hopefully have the same piece of hardware and shooting becomes closer to real life reactions rather than a virtually no weight mouse that you tap.

I don't agree with the Orange Box (the console ports were pig disgusting) or NFS purchases, also try out MGS4 if it comes with a collection of the series.

Get a mouse and keyboard, then buy UT3.

Burnout Paradise is good if you've never played Burnout before, otherwise it will make you rage alot.

Uncharted Drakes Fortune is good, although at some points I did notice a sharp FPS drop to around 15.

Future firmware patch is rumored to allow backwards compatibility

Depends on where you look, but Amazon always do a good deal with games, beware the region tho

Mouse and Keyboards arn't used in most of the current PS3 game's, you'd be better getting used to the controller, it don't take long, the only thing which took me some getting used to was the R2/L2 buttons.

Games i have atm which i think are great are Devil May Cry 4, Resistance Fall Of MIne, Ridge Racer and Pro Evo 7, but other good games are MGS4 and UT3

Ales, CoD4 is really only short on normal mode. On Veteran, or Hard-Mode it really plays through nicely.

When was a patch released for the PS3 version of The Orange Box?... I've not seen it =/

As for CoD4 I haven't finished it yet(playing casual) but reading loads of reviews while choosing some games most of them complained by how short it was.

Heavenly Sword isn't very good unless you like repetetive button mashan, but Assassins Creed, despite being somewhat repetetive, has an endless supply of townspeople you can stab in the back of the head.

I meant to say, Xbox360 Premium can support 1080i, but 1080i is lower than 1080p that is supported by PS3. And 1080i is like twice less than 1080p.

Need For Speed ProStreet seems to be boring for me, because I spend more time in menus that actually driving. It also made me realize that I don't like racing games of such kind — I'd like to drive in the city — like GTA, but with better (more realistic) controls. That's why I asked about Burnout Paradise.

Before PS3 I could only "relax" in GTA:SA, Lineage II or UT'04 (with bots), because these games are maximum of what my ancient NVidia Ti4200 is capable to support. Now, instead I can play modern titles and be active as usually.

More questions:
— does anyone use inverted view axis? Seems like I prefer it better.
— have you ever felt not very well (like, giddy) after playing a game? I noticed that it happens to me when there is a lot of movement. Earlier I though that its somehow related to fps, but now I doubt that fps is the only factor.

By the way, I changed 40 GB default HDD to 160 GB one, and installed Linux Ubuntu 7.1 on PS3. Whoever is interested in details/hints for both processess please post here.
