~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:Unless your computer is good stay with XP. Simple. Don't blame Vista for your crap computer, people. Only problem I've ever had was it got screwed over when I used some Firewall it didn't like, 10 minute restore fixed it though.
It likes to fuck up with loads of firewalls, I don't think anyone has been able to make a firewall be completely Vista friendly yet. Not all the free ones that I know of, anyways.
~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:*Low CPU taking disk-defrag every Wednesday, this isn't auto unless you set it on XP, and most computer newbies wouldn't know about it. It's auto on on Vista, and keeps your computer defragmented.
Windows default defrag may be free but it's by no means special or any good. I personally use Diskeeper and it's much better. It's not needed but it's faster, it can be scheduled to run at regular intervals (if one isn't set it'll defrag on a regular basis depending on how often files are moved, deleted and edited) and it also tells you, in percentages, the amount of time you'll gain in terms of loading speeds.
~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:*Looks a lot better, the transparent effects are cool. Plus the colours.
This is why it's a memory hog. It doesn't need all this shit. Sure it may look all nice and pretty but if the computer won't run smoothly then it ain't needed. This is why the majority of decent things look like shit, it's also why I have used every Windows OS in the original Classic Theme as it runs so much damn faster. It may not look pretty but don't complain to us if your PC runs slow because of it's GUI.
~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:*Side bar, very useful.
You mean the Gadgets and yeah, they are useful but again, not needed and are an EXTREME memory hog. If you're on a DSL connection, and I'm fairly certain over half the population of this forum are, then you don't need any of that crap anyway. It also drains memory which you'll need extensively if playing games.
~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:*Backgrounds are cool too. 3D screensavers etc.
Memory hog. Goddamn Vista has a fucken bunch of 'em eh? Still, this isn't as bad as the above things you mentioned.
~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:*Instant search results, can take 3+ mins to search on WinXP.
This I have to agree on. Though because I am a memory hog myself and want whatever memory I can spare, I never have indexing active. Never really need it either. What I do love with Vista is it's Start Menu Search/Run feature, where you type something in (eg., Paint or Notepad), press Enter and it runs.
~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:*DX10, didn't really bother me though.
I have it but only because it updated itself. I'm never going to use it on this piece of crap and I'm never going to buy Crysis so I'm not worried about the problems of DX10.
~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:Although you can rip these off to XP, looks kind of stupid unless you got the Toolbar+Sidebar, which I dunno if you can get.
Sidebar isn't needed but yeah, you can get a complete Vista-looking Windows XP. My mate, a complete graphics hog, has it. I couldn't stand it personally.
~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:*Support will eventually stop for XP, you'll be forced to switch to Vista eventually.
This is true, but you're more than likely going to find much better support for free online anyway. I know I have.
~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:*Quite a few games in the future will be Vista only.
Like the above note, it won't be a for a good while yet. It would not be a game developers wisest move to stop the developing of Windows XP games. Yes, they'll start making games for Vista but it'd be so retarded for them to stop making them for XP as well. Especially when XP's support has run out completely yet.
~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:So yeah, Vista is good if you're computer is good. If it isn't don't blame Vista. XP can run well enough on 100MB Ram, but recommended 512MB. For Vista I would recommened 1-2GB Ram, and a dual core.
Vista will run fine on a 1GB of RAM but the pros say to run it on 2GB and I'd have to agree. A Dual-core processor is never needed as I run an Intel Dual-core 1.46GHz processor and again, runs fine for me. That and having a dual-core processor ain't going to change much as not everything is dual-core compatible just yet.
It'd also be good to note that anyone using Windows Vista Home-Basic 32-bit, do NOT go out and upgrade your PC to 4GB of RAM. It won't do just shit, as you'll only get the effect of AROUND 3GB of that before it basically throws the rest away.
Home Basic 64-bit can use up to 4GB, Home-Premium can run up to 6-8GB if I'm not mistaken (6GB for 32-bit, 8GB for 64). And IIRC, Vista Ultimate 64-bit's maximum RAM "intake" would be approximately 32GB, that's if I recall correctly of course. Though having 32GB for a personal computer and even a gaming one is excessive as NO game needs it. Yet, anyways lol.
~[A]Kaiden~ wrote:Vista CAN be slow or annoying to those without decent specs. I know. My laptop has it. Every now and again it'll just freeze, lag, firefox won't open, and other things. So I know, before you start arguing lol.
As do I but Vista
does have a lot of bugs and you'd be a fool not to admit that. Vista SP1 has just been released and apparently it fixes some bugs. But most people just notice that it increases boot times and decreases shut down times, which is good enough for me lol.
To anyone using Windows Vista, check out
www.pcstats.com for guides on improving performance. I'll get the full link later, the site is having some downtime atm so that sucks...
