Depending on the FPS game, a controller is a lot more fair and stops tournament fanatics from keeping the game from accuracy circle jerks.
Mouse is undoubtedly the best though.

I've tried playing a FPs game using the joystick and it's quite impossible, as playing C&C Red Alert on the PS1. I've played Il-2 sturmovick for 1 year using only the keyboard and when I bought my ztyping TRUST joystick I realized how much time I wasted with the WASD keys.
Depends wich game are you playing but I'd love to play all games just with Keyboard and Mouse.

Anything except action, drivan, and flyan gaems, I prefer keyboard.
By action, I mean shit like DMC4. Max Payne I would consider Third person shooter.

Depends on the game.
Shooters are only playable with keyboard and mouse for me.
Driving games, I have a wheel and pedals.
Flight Sim I have a throttle and all pedals.
Oh and my old Logitech Wingman Rumblepad is kinda cool for motorbike games. Namely Motocross Madness 2 and MotoGP.
Incidentally - Wired mouse is better for games, but does it matter: normal optical or laser?
EDIT: Lack of KB+M, that's why consoles SUCK.

I suppose the controller is the most versatile.
