It's because of tension
Doom 3 has a lot of jumpy bits, you know with Imps everywhere etc
System Shock 2 is just you constantly tense from all the different factors.
First off I've completed it with James in coop, but after playing it single player now, yeah I know roughly "whats gonna happen!" but I still feel tense.
In coop there's no penalty for dying at all! In single player its a nanite penalty, and if you die before finding a quantum reconstructor then you are permanently dead.
At the moment I'm about halfway through, I'm saving my bigger weapons (grenade launcher) for later in the game, but my shotgun has just completely run out of standard shells (although I have a ton of anti-personnel, hoarding them for the end)
And so i started reverting to my pistol, but because i leave high condition weapons (7, 8, 9, 10) near key elevators, and then take the average weapons, (in this case a con 4 pistol) i didn't keep too much of an eye on its condition
Before I knew it I had to face 6 enemies at once and my pistol broke. Leaving me with my laser rapier, but these enemies aren't good to face them with it.
And in coop, cyborg assasins are just an annoyance, in Single Player they are to be feared.
Did I mention im playing this on Easy and i'm finding its still quite hard. I wouldn't say I'm completely shit, but the tactic of progressing slowly and finding every item, although resourceful, means i have to face more enemies.
This game is just amazingly scary, although I'm a little dumbed down from scary games because of the almighty Silent Hill, once you play 1-3, no other game will make you feel as scared.
Bit annoying really ¬_¬
