I have a dream

...to make a game engine that would be free and user-friendly.

So everyone could use it to make a game.

It should feature good graphics, physics, built-in AI, dialogue, quest and interface systems, lipsync, and what's most important — user-friendly programming language (that is not C++) and editor (that is not 3dsmax), basic logic and OOP, presets (free models, free textures) extensive documentation. It would be sharpened for Linux and Mac OS, but also available for Windows (maybe not).

It should feature backwards compatibility, so all old games built on it would always look up-to-date in terms of graphics & physics.

It all should work out of the box and be relatively simple to understand for a person which is generally familiar with the computer stuff. A rule of thumb: if the new user downloads the engine in the morning, in the evening they should be able to have a small room with a light bulb and dog, which would bark. And it should never require a user to code big ass abstract libraries with mathematical methods in it.

My role in it would be sponsoring (of course I need to earn those money first, but it's all a dream — as I said), just like Mark Shuttleworth's Foundation sponsors Ubuntu Linux.

It would fill the market with many free and low-budget commercial games, small or big, single or multiplayer, different genre and style. Every person with a PC would be able to self express by creating a new virtual reality.

It's banal, it's too idealistic, but I do have a dream!

Not a bad idea, but not making it Windows compatible would be one of your biggest downfalls. Sure, it may be harder to make but in the long run people will thank you for it. I will be one of those people.

I also dislike the idea of how game engines need good graphics. Have people suddenly forgotten that a good game should not be on how it looks but how it is played? Gameplay and storyline should all come before graphics and audio.

Do people have to be reminded of the times where good graphics weren't an option? And where developers actually made at least half-decent storylines?

I agree about graphics entirely. I'm talking about a minimal good looking level of graphics which would allow recreation of anything that is in mind of a developer. In Unreal Engine 1, you couldn't create a realistic mountain with a forest beneath, you were limited to industrial landscapes.

I still like graphics of GTA: San Andreas. I still play it from time to time and I think that I would prefer 5 new games on the same engine, instead of waiting for one with an updated engine. GTA: San Andreas will be always beautiful — in its own way.

Talking about the OSes, both Linux and Mac OS — step by step but still — are gaining a bigger market share (Mac OS holds 12%, that's a lot already!) I'm pretty sure in the future — and the dream is about the future — Windows won't be a dominating OS, but one of them.

Linux and Mac OS are easier to develop to (as I heard), but they have the same problem — there are so few 3D games for them. Possibly, such engine could change the situation and many users, for whom right now lack of games is a decisive factor, would switch to them.

Don't buy this, it's not worth it. My mate got it and he can't use it. He got the latest one, it's just the first one with "better" graphics (they're alright but not that much of an improvement). The first one has way more models and shit however.

The thing is buggy as hell, either versions and not worth the amount you pay for it.

It's the closest thing to what Dae had described - game engine with ability to edit it to make a unique game, easy software, free models, free textures, etc.

You don't have to buy it, I think they should have a trial lying around somewhere.

I hate the thing too, I myself prefer huge games with complex libraries and powerful programming and modeling requirements.

In the end it is all just personal preference, but I would much rather use a proper 3D engine for graphics than FPS Creator. At least with that I can make my own models lol.

I'm just no good at 3D modeling but I really wanna get into it. Seriously, I envy you.

I think the correct graphics limitation for this kind of engine should last with age.

Compare Unreal/UT engine to the Halflife GoldSRC engine.

GoldSRC still looks pretty good after 10 years. Deus Ex/Unreal Tournament hasn't aged as well.

It should also be modular, in that you can upgrade it as developers update its capabilities. It should also be beyond the capabilities of a standard PC. So that a standard PC can generate models of a nice look with reasonable texture quality. But if you had a very powerful computer you could generate models of an exception quality and high spec textures.

And yeah Macs/Linux don't have the game range of Windows, but games last longer when they are multi-ported. For example I could guarantee that Resident Evil: Outbreak (1&2) would still be played now if they were also ported to PC, X-Box and GC

This is what I was thinking as well. It should be easily upgradable for any purpose.
