Firefox 3.5

...is out now. Get it on

www.firefox.com

You should get it because it's a lot faster. Not maybe in terms of memory consumption, but it just renders the pages faster -- prolly as fast, as Google Chrome.

Below you can find two hacks for those who don't like changes in the interface.

1. If you want to get rid of "new tab" button, close Firefox and then go to
Code: Select all
C:\Users\Your Username Here\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

find a folder with weird name like b34vh5gy.default, then navigate to folder chrome/.

Find file userChrome-example.css, rename it to userChrome.css, add this line to the end of the file:
Code: Select all
.tabs-newtab-button {display: none}

2. If you want to be able to close the last tab (I mean, if you have only one tab opened, close button disappears for it in FF3), also add this code:
Code: Select all
/* Add tab-close-button to last tab*/
.tabbrowser-tabs[closebuttons='alltabs'] > .tabbrowser-tab >
.tab-close-button { display: -moz-box !important; }
.tabbrowser-tabs:not([closebuttons='noclose']):not
([closebuttons='closeatend']) >
.tabbrowser-tab[selected='true'] > .tab-close-button { display: -moz-
box !important; }

Then open Firefox, type about:config in the URL bar, find browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab and change it to false.

Controversy. I love it.

Why does the fox look more like a foetus now?

It doesn't remind a foetus to me.

This is the real firefox, by the way:

Quite possibly the worst FireFox ever, I've had non-stop errors since installing this. It isn't compatible with Steam, keeps fucking with my DNS and overlaps most programs for some retarded reason so I see parts of Firefox when I'm chatting on an MSN window which is at full size.

I have none of those problems.

Sometimes it freezes my computer while trying to load anything ActiveX.

Otherwise it's smooth as a baby's ass.

Workaround for a Firefox 3.5 bug where they activate random windows after minimizing which would confuse the state of some Steam windows

I had the same troubles with Firefox 3 (why I migrated to Opera) but 3.5 has been as good as gold.

K-meleon for life.

Firefox is a processor hog. V2 used to be good and lean, but v3 onwards is just bloatware.

Processor hog? 2% usage on idle with Core 2 Duo at 2.13GHz.

RAM hog, maybe.

Not even RAM hog, it uses like 25mb lol

Comparing that with Opera, Safari 4 and IE:
120MB
150MB
Like 60MB.

My K-Meleon is currently using 15mb of RAM, and that's while I'm using it with 7 tabs open. It also uses the same gecko engine as the latest firefox, only it doesn't suck.

Firefox also takes ages to load. I don't care about having a myriad of features that wipe my arse for me, I just want my browser to be fast, and compatible with all the sites I want to view.

your fucked up PC

What

Psychotic, I've just tested it, try and open your Task Manager while monitoring the memory usage of Firefox. Then continuously open new web-sites and start streaming videos or music. After that close the tabs and stay on only one tab. You'll notice that the memory doesn't flush, yet stays the same as before.

Sorry for bad grammar, feeling a bit shape now.
