3D is not a gimmick anymore, damn it

Postby Siva » Sun Dec 19, 10 12:59 am

Don't you agree?

3D already had it's gimmick phase. Everyone remembers anaglyph glasses, 3D is nothing new. Only this time, it works and it's actually fucking everywhere.

Right now it's nothing too major but soon? Think about it.

Eight years ago, 2002. A 30" LCD would have cost around £6,000? source

3DTV's can already be had for less astronimical figures.

I like the potential applications for 3D. Shit I would get behind it for google earth alone. And at present -- 3D doesn't even fucking work for me on TV's.

3D is a gimmick and will forever be a gimmick, my man.

Give it another year or two, it'll die like the laserdisc

It IS still a gimmick until it becomes a standard, which I don't see for a few years (when 3D tvs that aren't reliant on glasses are widespread.)
I am dead.

In a way it isn't a gimmick because (like HD) it improves the viewing experience.

However, it is still a gimmick because there are entertainment pieces ORIENTATED JUST AROUND 3D ALONE.
Signatures are dumb.

Could anyone please give me a sneak peek about 3D glasses? Can I buy those and watch 3D content and play games on my computer?

Or - do I need a special LCD for that or GPU. Will NVIDIA glasses work with AMD GPU?

You need a monitor with a specific refresh rate (most of which are garbage) and I believe the Nvidia 3D Vision glasses are limited to Nvidia GPU's.

3D / NVIDIA GURU REPORTING IN.

Lol, yes. It's still a gimmick for another couple years to come.

My honest opinion is that it's a great thing. 3D makes you feel immersed quite a lot in games. Best thing about it, is that it can be turned on with just about every game out there old and new.

I can't use it for hours on end as it will bother my eyes a bit and/or glasses hurt a bit.

-but if you have a nvidia gpu, and an extra £250-300 lying around (lol) then go for it. Not to mention that the 120Hz refresh rate is nice and smooth, and will help in games. Sure TN panels aren't as vibrant as IPS, but the refresh rate creates a notable difference when viewing videos, or playing games (The same with IPS it's color being a noticeable difference).

@Dae
To set a movie or game into 3d mode, you will first need to buy a 120Hz capable TV/monitor. I would recommend a monitor, as half of the TV's out there have features that "emulate" 120Hz, but aren't actually capable. Every 120Hz monitor on the other hand actually produce 120Hz refresh rates. Most 3D monitors now come in 23.6" displays which provide 1920x1080. After you have a screen, you still need a nvidia 3D capable gpu, and the 3D vision kit.

This is my monitor, and I love it <3

I'd also like to mention that Mitsubishi is in development with a 120hz IPS panel.

When it releases down the road..

There's no reason why you should buy a TN.

Price & power consumption.

It will come in handy for video professionals, though.

Great point. However if the money is there, and you're looking for either a fast monitor that is 3D-Capable, or has a vibrant display with astounding color depth, look no further. :)

Eventually (like most things), these inventions will go mainstream, and the price will lower due to time/brand competition.
