Mid - high range gaming laptop

Postby Bob » Sun Apr 03, 11 11:00 am

Right guys, I'm currently in the market for a new laptop capable, but not specifically for the gaming environment. Ideally i would like it to play Human Revolutions with no qualms or queries. Budget of £1000 ideally but I am willing to go a bit higher if it really is worth it.

Pc world has a ACER Aspire 8943G - radeon hd 5650, 4gb ram, i7 720qm, 640gb hdd system that comes in bang on budget. I'm pretty sure it could be acquired elsewhere for a knock down price but whats the general consensus on that bad boy? Can I get a better machine for a lower/similar price?

Link the laptop, it will support it (That laptop is actually sorta better than my current PC) but you'd want to see if it overheats often.

edit:

Also please notice that unless modifications of any sort come out to affect the single-player's problems, 360 is definitely the platform of choice for DXHR it seems.

Am I reading this right? James actually telling me when I'm on the verge of getting a laptop that its really not worth it?

Laptops aren't good for multi-player games because of the workload leading it to overheat. Human Revolution is not a multi-player game.
---

I can tell you right now that is an expensive laptop, the video card is not of the best average consumer versions of that generation.

Alternative:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/237234
Similar, pretty much 200 quid cheaper including VAT

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00440D928/r ... B00440D928

Amazon link to the same

Similar. With both I'm a little bit worried about the clock speed and know nothing about safely overclocking a laptop due to how hot they get.

Another alternative:
Dell XPS 15

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=%22Del ... 20&bih=820

Problem with this one is hard drive space but I recommend keeping music etc on external memory storage so it should be okay. the clockspeed is better and i think the 420m is better than the 5650 for laptops

Another alternative:
Dell XPS 17

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q= ... 20&bih=820

Personally I'll get the XPS 17.

Another alternative
If you want performance (laptop lolol):

It has to be a laptop though as I'm never at home now due to work and would like to be able to continue playing a few games to kill the time. Doubt I'll be doing much online gaming on it either.

I like the look of the hp but its only a 15.4" screen. Is there something similar in terms of price and performance with say a 17" screen?

Edit: As for the dell: I'm no entirely well versed on laptop graphics cards, is that nvidia good enough to hold the test of time for say 2 years?

Wouldn't have a clue. Those are the only laptops I would look at if you're going to play games like Human Revolution.

I understand why you need a laptop and that's why I'm not suggesting a desktop computer.

I'm not commiting to anything until I get home in a week or so anyway. Just trying to do a wee bit of research before I plunge head first into a shitter.

I have no idea what a refurbished laptop is. :$

Once again the clock speed worries me, not sure how that scales.

You may want to check up on that laptop and videogame performance (not to mention cheaper prices again)

The clock speed doesn't have to be particularly high on these new "i" processors. Refurbished laptop is a used laptop that has been used, sold back to the store and rebuilt and resold I think.

it might have to be higher than 2.6 at least if i'm not mistaken on how they allocate for videogames, I'm sure about this because of the utilization of cores isn't very good at the moment. even for dual core. im not an expert at all but used to seeing the higher series of i7s for desktop computers overclocked from 2.*ghz (?) to 4.2-4.8ghz minimum

that price for a used laptop with new parts is abysmal

consider the MSI laptop i posted last, i've been seeing that around A LOT since you've posted this topic. just be aware you cant take it outside etc without it dying in an hour but powered it will act like a portable gaming desktop :)

seriously loads of people have it now and saying nothing but good stuff.

infact i am 100% going to say it's the best laptop posted in this thread despite originally laughing at it. it is capable.

I went ahead and made a rash move and got the refurbished HP from Dixons and am instantly regretting it. Any idea how to cancel an order ASAP? No way of doing it on the site.

For future reference.. never ever purchase an HP product. Their products have the highest failure rate. Working in tech repair at one point, our backroom was ALWAYS packed full of that shit.

Just found this thread;

Yesterday I purchased a laptop, it's a Dell Inspiron N5010.
It comes with HD5650
IntelCore i5 - Model: 480M | Cache: 512KB + 3MB | MHz: 2666-2933 | Core: 2/4 | FSB: 2400 | CineBench: 564
8GB RAM
500GB HDD 5400RPM

I'm satisfied so far, it comes with 3 years of warrancy and it costed 600euros. I hope it will be able to run DX:HR fine, even though I bought the laptop to use it while in university.

You may get decent quality, only time will tell :/ I hope it runs well for you though.
