In the next few months I wish to buy an m17x.

Yes, the battery life sucks.

Yes, it's heavy.

Yes, it's sexy.

I was debaiting on the falcon-nw gimmick, or alienware gimmick, but falcon is even more overpriced (I'm talking like.. $1000 more :x which is ridiculous).

No Derek, it's his ACTION list.

>Insert patronising pep-talk here.

Don't get Alienware, seriously. My friend has an M15x, it weighs an absolute tonne, is reeeedonculously thick and has some of the poorest quality plastics/screens I've seen this side of 2000.

If you really can see a use for an expensive laptop, and I know this is feeding the Aidan, look in to Origin: http://www.originpc.com/eon17-s-gaming- ... atures.asp

Yeah, you know how I roll.

I actually have all of my parts though lol.. my 2600k will be here in 3 days.

I'm going to return my 560 ti though and probably upgrade to a 570 or 580.

560 is pretty decent, but It won't last long in the next couple years.

A 580 would be good for now, and I'll just sli it down the road.

WEIGHT DOESNT MATTER BECAUSE I WORK OUT N IT MAKES EVERYTHING BETTER AHAGGGHH MASCULINITY (in all seriousness though, I don't really care how much a laptop weighs. I'm actually quite ignorant about a lot of things.)

-but actually, I was looking at the msi for a while lol. It's gotten positive reviews. I like Origin notebooks as well.

I'll probably still buy an alienware though because I am me. It floats my boat, and it's what I would like.

I wish I could test them out somewhere >:(

I was checking out asus' RoG laptop as well.. wich is a tad less of a gimmick, but actually has solid reviews.

Battery life doesn't matter either by the way as each seat at my uni has an outlet, and whenever I went somewhere with my other lappy, I plugged it in anyway.

I've used an m17x before, and I don't find that it sucks.

There are obviously better laptops than the m17x, but I like the m17x.

I'll think about it though. I'm dabating on the asus rog, msi, and m17x.

17"+ laptops are intended to be desktop replacements and primarily belong on the desk at home.

Seeing as you've already 'bought' a brand new desktop, you're not using it as a desktop; therefore, its primary function must be a travel machine. The three main requirements for a travel machine are: durability (which results from quality), reliability (ie, no need to plug it in) and portability.

Durability/Quality: plastic; not a durable material. Has consistent issues with hinges breaking, and screens smashing.
Speaking of screens, here's what notebookcheck.net had to say - "Our first brightness test of the notebook revealed a maximum brightness of 263 cd/m2 in the lower central measuring quadrant. However, we could establish considerable a brightness reduction in the upper corner areas with the naked eye, which was also confirmed by our measurements. The maximum brightness decreased down to 159.5 cd/m2". For clarity, 250 cd/m2 is considered standard of a £400 laptop. 13 cd/m2 difference between a standard laptop and a 'premium' product?
There is also an assessment category for the M17x known as 'keyboard bend'...nuff said on that.

Reliability (battery life): CNET, got my back?: "when we ran Battery Eater's Classic test, which runs the CPU at full belt until the battery is exhausted, the M17x conked out after only 51 minutes, despite the hefty nine-cell lithium-ion battery stuck up its backside".

51 MINUTES
9 CELL LITHIUM

Speaking of 9 cell lithium battery, let's look at the profile:
Image
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtslwxL_Leg

Portability: max weight 11.68 pounds. You can say "that doesn't matter" as much as you want; you will be tired of it within a month. The fact of the matter is, I know someone with an M15x and duffle bag, it's wider than he is.

Now imagine that plus 2 inches for the screen size which is probably 4+ extra inches in footprint.

To quote the Greek philosopher Zeno: "dat shit aint fittin on ur uni desk meight".

Okay, so the three criteria for using said laptop as a portable device has been refuted, and so has the idea that it's a desktop replacement. The only thing it could possibly be now is a gaming machine; unless you edit video which you could just do on your desktop.

BUT WAIT! Games while trying to study? That's pretty stupid. Okay, so you'll play them outside of lectures.

WAIT AGAIN! That means you'll have to take around a mouse. You can either choose to get a wireless mouse and pay more unnecessary money, or get a USB mouse which will inevitably tangle and get in the way. Regardless of either of these, you'll still have to take a mousepad around...and batteries if it's a wireless one. So, you fulfill all of that, and you're ready to play some games only to realise.

YOU LOOK LIKE A TWAT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

In Conclusion

Don't buy fucking Alienware. You have no reason to buy a 17 inch laptop. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Well after tax's and shipping.. The m17x is about $2000. That's with a 3.2Ghz QM sandy bridge quad core, gtx 485m, 6Gigs of ram, 750Gb HDD, a great quality case, 1080p resolution, windows 7 premium, and a high end network card.

It doesn't seem too bad to me vs the cost/benefit with falcon which is priced way too ridiculously.

The m17x IS thick. However the R3 is actually much thinner.

I already have an Ikari, and my famous rat 7, I'll throw my rat in with the m17x.

I go to my friend's house often too, and this would be good for playing with him.

There are obviously cheaper options out there, but the price isn't THAT ridiculous.

I'm debating between the msi and the alienware too. I've seen that msi numerous times. I do think the subwoofer is a gimmick feature though.

Perhaps an m14x would be better.

This thread is called "Buying another gimmick [m17x]"

Tant has convinced me not to get a 17".

I've looked into it, and no longer want a bulky 17" m17x.

I've decided on an m14x instead.

You can see by my title that I'm obviously going to buy a 'gimmick' in a month or two with my summer job. I do like alienware laptops, and nothing is going to change my opinion on that. The form factor is what helped me out.

I do listen to what people have to say if it's a real response, and not "nice arm pit blower you are buying".

Thanks Tant, and Masta.

Now I'll be half a twat

good one

you did the same thing with the RAT 7 topic as well just FYI

your topics are becoming less discussion and more show-off/praise-my technological-prowess-as-i-buy-another-gimmick types

don't mean to be a dick but it's just irritating to the people who actually want to talk about non-gimmick electronics and computer systems (myself included)

I'm going to buy an Alienware laptop. As far as buying another brand goes, it's out of the question.

Based on the fact that the m17x is meant as a desktop replacement, I have now chosen the m14x.

Unless you mention it's a gimmick on this forum, everyone will bash you even harder unless you're aware that it's a gimmick. You do pay more for the alienware, but you have to understand that I also love the look and appearance of it as well.

Example...
Topic: Buying a honda

"I'm going to buy a Honda Civic Si"
"Don't buy a honda"

It's useless and redundant to someone that really wants a honda vehicle. However, someone could steer that person in the direction the best they can with buying a honda.

"Don't get an Si man. Si is really useless and V-Tec doesn't do anything. It costs more with insurance too. Go with a normal civic."

-and there we have it folks.

Unless my topic says "Should I buy an alienware", I'm most likely not open to change.

This (believe it or not) HAS been productive. I really want an m14x now, but could still possibly buy an msi. If you don't like the thread, then simply avoid commenting on it.

My rat7 thread was just fucking ridiculous. It's an average mouse at best.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. In the end, it's whatever makes yourself happy.

I've used eyefinity before and love it. Yes, it's great that you have an advantage, and are immersed with three panels. Personally, I prefer 3D better. YES YES, I know I don't have a peripheral advantage with a huge resolution, but I find 3D more entertaining and fun.

On another note, but on the same page:
I did take your advice on the 2600k. It arrived today, and I fired it up to notice a much greater difference in clock speeds compared to the 2500k.

1) Fact: The current trend of conscious PC users shows that they are well-aware that all Alienware products are gimmicks designed to fool you into paying more for what you actually get. It might be a bit of a moot point to say that, despite your hardcore admonition, you still considered the MSI as an alternative to the Alienware. You cannot say you will still buy an Alienware while disregarding users' opinions, then consider buying an MSI laptop. It's called being contradictory.

2) You are using a faulty analogy comparing different car models but by the same company. Under this logic, if someone were to recommend you something besides an Alienware, everybody in this topic has recommended you a Dell computer (because Alienware is owned by Dell).

3) This thread has nothing to do with Eyefinity or advice I gave you on a different topic.

My point remains. If you want to make topics that you are actually encouraging other posters to share their opinions in, whilst simultaneously being tolerant and open-minded of their views and regarding them in equal respect to yours, you can post in here. If you want to make gimmick threads, post in General Spam.

Almost everybody in this thread has agreed that Alienware is not the brand to buy concerning laptops. Yet at the end of the thread you're still considering an Alienware laptop. I hope you realize there's something very, very wrong here, and it isn't the fact that we all hate you deep inside.

You cannot say you will still buy an Alienware while disregarding users' opinions, then consider buying an MSI laptop. It's called being contradictory.

I've always had the msi laptop in the back of my mind since I've seen the review 4 months back. I'm already aware that you pay more for the alienware with no gain. However, some would argue that you're paying the extra for the look.

2) You are using a faulty analogy comparing different car models but by the same company. Under this logic, if someone were to recommend you something besides an Alienware, everybody in this topic has recommended you a Dell computer (because Alienware is owned by Dell).

Dell bought out Alienware years ago, and it's common knowledge. It isn't faulty at all...

m17x
m14x

Civic Si
Civic

I'm comparing laptop models, with the same company. As for the msi, I'm seeing it as the equivalent in price of the m14x. Albeit it is more powerful for around the same price, but lacks the build appearance I enjoy with the m14x.

I didn't need the m17x, so now I'm looking at the m14x. I'm looking at the Alienware foremost, and now I know what build model I would purchase based on my wants/needs.

3) This thread has nothing to do with Eyefinity or advice I gave you on a different topic.

It shows that I'm open to certain opinions depending on what I would like to purchase. As for eyefinity, it's related, as I enjoy the appearance of the m14x, is there anything wrong with that? I shouldn't think so. It makes me happy.

My point remains. If you want to make topics that you are actually encouraging other posters to share their opinions in, whilst simultaneously being tolerant and open-minded of their views and regarding them in equal respect to yours, you can post in here. If you want to make gimmick threads, post in General Spam.

If I post this in spam, James is going to load it up with (funny) youtube videos. That being said, I probably would buy the m17x and realize how huge it is (and how many features I will never use), and lug it around everywhere. On my half, I should have made the title more accurate.

Almost everybody in this thread has agreed that Alienware is not the brand to buy concerning laptops. Yet at the end of the thread you're still considering an Alienware laptop. I hope you realize there's something very, very wrong here, and it isn't the fact that we all hate you deep inside.

I've made it clear NUMEROUS times that I would like to purchase an alienware laptop. I was clouded on what build would best for me, and that is now resolved. Being that the msi laptop has also been on the back of my mind, I might purchase that instead. If I was open to buying anytype of laptop, you would see "Buying Portable Gaming Laptop, suggestions?"

This thread is just pissing me off now, because I now know the two laptops I am looking at, yet you continue to argue, etc.

As I said before, you do not have to reply (especially if you feel it's not going to change my opinion).

Now you're just unnecessarily offending me.

EDIT (an hour later):

To be honest though, with this throbbing conversation we're having, I am much more lenient towards the msi laptop now, than I was before.

Thanks for kicking the shit out of my brain :)

There was still no need to offend me though. Even if you do "hate me deep inside", then keep it to yourself.

yes, i am offending you by offering my opinion

your post is so full of holes and logical fallacies i won't even bother anymore. Arguing gets you nowhere, it's better for you to come to your own personal realization that you're buying gimmick products than for anyone to convince you (see: RAT7, any other product you've recommended/talked about buying on this forum)

enjoy your arm pit blower

also

You're opinion is clearly offensive, and unnecessary. You didn't need to say that. Now I just feel like shit. Go on and kick me while I'm down.

There are nicer ways of telling someone something without being a complete dick.

Both of our posts are full of holes. If they weren't then there wouldn't be an argument (which I never wanted in the first place).

Anyhow, I'm currently looking at, and partially sold on the GX780. I don't think it's customizable, however it does mention two SATA ports. I'd love to have an ssd boot drive, and HDD for storage, yet I can't customize it. I should be able to open the back, and put my own SSD.

What are your opinions on Asus' RoG Laptops?
