8 hours in, been trying to get all challenges and levels on S rank and finding all red rings etc. I'm 4 levels in out of 9 and 2/6 bosses done.

Adorable graphics and aethetics. Really loving the classic/modern perspective you see of all levels.
Good platforming, I've always been a Sonic fan over the Mario series for this reason.
Routes for everyone! How Sonic should be played.
Classic levels are very good.
Modern levels are amazing, maybe better than the classic levels. Boost is amazing
Great camera work, it can be disorientating at times but it is always easy to follow once you get the hang of the level.
Music and sounds are part of the highest tier in videogames. Remixes are all welcome. Songs such as Emerald Green Zone, Sonic Boom, Endless Possibility can be unlocked and you can choose what you want to play during any level.

Bosses I've faced so far are too easy even on hard mode.
Sonic still doesn't lose all of his rings if he is hurt. Dilutes threat of enemies.
Controls can be clunky sometimes. With the 3d aspect I've witnessed a few times classic Sonic would spindash towards or away from the screen despite all his levels being '2D'.
It is not a flawless port:
Almost destined to crash if you retry a level after beating it. If you complete a level, go back to the level select and restart the level that way. Retrying after deaths etc is not a problem.
I have witnessed moments of freezes 4 times which pause the game for a few seconds, I have witnessed a crash from this.
Game crashes if you have a lot of friends on Steam and check the online leaderboard.
Console-esqe streaming/pop-ins cause trouble for slowdowns.
Some 'friends' challenges are tedious.
The game needs an SDK or level editor of some sort. There is a lot of potential as you can see with the challenge levels in recent Sonic games.
I am dead.

I've played all the levels.

Green Hill
Classic - Nothing special, good nostalgia but Green Hill and Emerald Hill zones remain the best. 2/5
Modern - Amazing, good start for the things they've learnt from Sonic Colours. Gotta go fast. 4/5

Chemical Plant
Classic - WE NO NEED NO WALKIE TALKIE. 4/5
Modern - NO NO WALKIE TECHIE. 4/5

Sky Sanctuary
Classic - Fun platforming level, gotta go fast. 3/5
Modern - My second favourite level based on my favourite level of the classic games. - 5/5

Speed Highway
Classic - Very good. 4/5
Modern - Would be great but it seems mindless, but to make up there's amazing shortcuts. 3/5

City Escape
Classic - Best classic level in the game. 5/5
Modern - Utter crap. Ruined a great level with this boring scripted nonsense. 1/5

Seaside Hill
Classic - Amazing design, if you fail and go the lower routes the zone highly resembles Labyrinth zone from Sonic 1. 5/5
Modern - 4/5 Good, simply good and fun to skip via water and tricks.

Crisis City
Classic - Cool. 5/5
Modern - Eh, better than Crisis City from Sonic 2006. 2/5

Rooftop Run
Classic - Awesome. 4/5
Modern - Best level in the game. 5/5

Planet Wisp
Classic - OK 2/5
Modern - Fun, possible to skip half of the latter half via ROCKET... ... ... Planet Wisp in HD is brilliant by the way. 4/5
I am dead.

Is Chemical Plant the level from Sonic 2, or a tribute of some sort? Or no realation whatsoever?

All 9 zones I mentioned are from the following main series games in this same order:

Sonic
Sonic 2
Sonic and Knuckles
Adventure
Adventure 2
Heroes
2006
Unleashed
Colours

Sky Sanctuary technically counts as Sonic 3 and Knuckles, because Sonic and Knuckles is essentially the last half of Sonic 3.

All levels are tributes and do not directly reflect the zones. There's a classic and modern stage for every one.

There's also 7 bosses, though I haven't fought the last two:
Metal Sonic - Bad Future Skydust Speedway (Sonic CD) - Classic Sonic
Egg Robot - Death Egg (Sonic 2) - Classic Sonic
Shadow - Outside of the Ark, forgot level name (Adventure 2) - Modern Sonic
Perfect Chaos - Ruins of Metro City (Adventure) - Modern Sonic
Silver the Hedgehog - Crisis City (2006) - Modern Sonic
Egg Dragoon - Space base or whatever (Unleashed) - Modern Sonic
Time Eater - Super Classic and Modern Sonic

The reason I got super hyped for Sonic Generations is that it explores the best formulas of the series and reimagines the levels for two game styles.
