Wjy?, Sonic Colors was good. Sonic Unleashed Daytime was good too. I think they understand the formula now.

Fan service arghhhhhhhhh

I'll give any game the benefit of the doubt, or better rephrased, I'm open to any sonic game, but I get verbally abused by the better half if they are crap (sonic and the secret rings was the closest thing to a breakup)

Sonic games have improved, and sonic games since Adventure has been fanservice for 'cool' or furry fandom. If restoring nostalgia and the original game winning formula is considered fanservice, I will soil myself.

You see, people who buy the recent Sonic games don't like 'gay' old Sonic.

Lets see good sonic games

Sonic trilogy
Sonic knuckles
Sonic 1 & 2 (master system/game gear)
Sonic 1 & 2 (gba)
Sonic Adventure 1
Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic colours (although i havent played this)
And a few others here and there

"Bad" sonic games

Sonic 360 - Loading times
Sonic and the secret rings - Just awful
Sonic and the black knight, I personally thought this was better than secret rings
Sonic the werehog, the missus stated "The sonic levels were good, the werehog levels were awful"

There is no "winning formula" for a good sonic game, less or more characters doesn't have any impact on the fanbase because the fanbase is divided

A sonic game made nowadays will inevitably upset someone

Sonic Generations is basically fanservice because they are trying to make a game for both sides of the fence

It could still be an excellent Sonic game

I don't believe in fanservice as the means to a good game. There needs to be a balance of how much ingenuity you put into your game, and how much it needs to be accommodating towards fans

Game sequels suffer massively because of fan service.

I just think if a game developer screws up a franchise, move on, and come back to it later. Don't turn the franchise into a potential cash cow and ruin it even further.

If they get Dead or Alive beach volleyball developers to make "Metroid: Other M squared, the return of Samus, the lost little puppy" I am going to cry inside.

Metroid other M was a product of fan service, two sides, 2D fans vs FPS fans, they tried to combine the two, massive flop.

edit: this post was basically done blind

Metroid Other M... is sadly... how the creator intended Metroid to be. Plot etc. Team Ninja said they had little input into the game.

There's 3 types of Sonic games

Classic
Dreamcast
Modern

Classic focuses on platforming, when you master it, the speed of Sonic comes into account and you get to speed run levels.

Dreamcast explores different types of playstyles, it dilutes the levels but platforming is still a major part for characters like Sonic and Shadow. Never was as good as the original games.

Modern = speed, speed, speed, speed. The teams thought it was about speed. Style of gameplay taken from Dreamcast but it is all about speed. There's also awkward combat levels taken from the Dreamcast era, which aren't fun at all. Recent games (Unleashed and Colors) got this formula right by incorporating some fun platforming from the past into it.

Generations = classic and modern in all 3 of the above's levels as two different styles for each (?), which is Classic and Modern sonic. This game uses the winning formula of the classic games under two different characters that plays differently.

As far as I'm concerned, this 'fan service' is them making a good game for once. This isn't some nostalgia stuff, because although these levels on both sides look like the levels we all know and love, they aren't because they're actually different and not identical. If it was a complete remake of the old levels, I would just play older Sonic games.

honestly, who cares about these kids raised on the modern games (look at aidan, max etc on ffx). sonic was and is better in its classic style. nothing will change my opinion on that

General consensus from reviews is;

Classic > "dreamcast" > Modern

Sonic adventure and adventure 2 are 90% games

Unleashed is 65%
Colours is 80%

I've always loved the level environments in Sonic games.

Wouldn't it be cool, if Sega designed our own world?

Like 8 reviews out, 'average' scores atm (average about 77/78 ATM)

I don't understand the repeated criticism, 3 reviews complained they didn't like the modern levels because they're modern levels in their respective game and they didn't like them there either. I find this a little confusing because all the levels in the game are supposed to be different than the original.

Mostly positive though, as you can see.

Who said the modern style isn't fun too?

I thought the reception was just "average", but most reviewers constantly quote Sonic 2006 as a reason why the series is suffering. The game is 5 f'ing years old.

What I like about generations is that it's intense, and eye-gluing (if you don't you'll die.. lol). It sticks the original sonic formula while incorporating new gameplay elements 50% of the time. I'll have to play a lot more of it to have a complete feel, but from what I've played so far, it's real fun!

Sega HAS done it.

I wouldn't say it's AMAZING, but Sega has definitely brought sonic back.
