The Verge wrote:As the Xbox 360 aged, rumors swirled around Microsoft’s next-generation console. Would we see an Xbox 720? An Xbox Infinity? A Nextbox? All those rumors turned out to be wrong: in Redmond today, Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One, set for release by the end of 2013. While the name was kept strictly under wraps, the Xbox One announcement confirmed many of the rumors we’d been hearing for months or even years. Those include live TV support, a new Kinect, upgraded specs, and a series of new next-generation games.

Microsoft built on what made the Xbox so popular in the first place: streaming entertainment and major franchises like Call of Duty or Halo. The latter even got its own TV series. But it also focused on ideas that are becoming more popular across gaming platforms, like gameplay sharing, a full suite of apps, and more robust support for its SmartGlass mobile interface. Here’s everything we learned about the Xbox One during Microsoft’s announcement.

What do you think of it?

Do you plan to get PS4, Xbox One or neither?

I enjoyed console gaming in the 90s and having said fare well to that era I do not see any reason to take what is essentially a step back in terms of my preferred gaming experience.

I suppose consoles rightfully take over the quality gaming scene sometime in the future, but cannot see it happening during the lifespan of either of these "new" toys. I want a console that doesn't make me feel like I'm playing on a damn SNES.

Don't really mind the name, don't plan on buying either though.

Well, at least it's not called the Xbox 720. Would've flipped my shit if they were truly that uninspired.

Know why it's called the Xbox One? Because only One will be sold.

Thank you, thank you very much.

Was hopelessly boring and no games jumped out at me as interesting, go figure. The Kinect now looks like the console itself, hilariously, the controller looks quite lame (although no sixaxis thankfully). It won't be a set top box for me, thanks. Although the overlay and 'snap' feature looked 'cool'.

What system is GTA V coming on?

It's just yet another flag that signifies the end of the traditional game console. There's something to be said about the industry here but I just can't put it succinctly, I am just very disappointed with all this to be honest

Yeah I'm really not surprised by any of this. Thanks Microsoft, now I get to hear shitheads talk about cod: ghosts all day. Fun.

Here's hoping Sony's will be better.

Also, I'm liking how Nintendo launched very early to separate themselves from Sony/MS.

So after infinity ward blew up (because of their fight with activision), and formed Respawn Entertainment; They have recently announced their new game "Titanfall," which will be on PC, Xbox One, 360. Yeah, more MS-only exclusive bullshit, but (besides the copious amount of cash given to them by Microsoft) this is why...

Respawn plans to use Microsoft's Cloud for AI calculations, Physics, Dedicated servers. Which is neat and all, but HAVE FUN ONLY PLAYING SINGLEPLAYER WHILE ONLINE, AND ENJOY YOUR LAGG IN SINGLEPLAYER IF YOUR INTERNET SUCKS.

XBOX ONE IS BASICALLY ONLIVE

- Xbox One, PC
- Xbox 360 version developed by someone else
- Planned to target current gen, but realized that they couldn't run it
- Started to look into next gen and the answer they got from Microsoft intrigued them
- They said they needed to focus on fewer hardware. In the future they are open to more. They don't specify if it would this project or another.
- Plan to use Microsoft's Cloud for dedicated servers and physics and AI calculations
- Spring 2014 Release Date
- To my eyes it looks visually very nice.
- First person shooter
- "Mech" and ground combat
- "Mech's" are called Titans.
- They want these Titans to feel fast. They can dodge etc.
- If you don't want to pilot the Titan you can have it follow you, killing people as it goes along.
- Player characters are called Pilots
- They are extremely agile. Can run on walls, multiple jumps.
- They can take down Titans. Jumping on them and shooting the "brain".
- You need to be cunning as a pilot. "Hit and fade" tactics is the term the game director uses.
- Pilots come equipped with a variety of weapons. Pistol, Assault Rifle, Anti-Titan Rocket Launcher, data knife used to hack AI characters into joining you.
- There are AI enemies on the maps.
- You survive longer than in COD. Making it more welcoming to newcomers.
- Source Engine. Building new engine = too much time.
- Source gives them 60 fps
- Rewrote aspects of it for next gen
- Article talks about the process of forming the team, being fired, prototyping ideas etc. I recommend reading it.
- Going for a District 9 or Blade Runner vibe.
- Integrate memorable single player moments into a multiplayer game.
- Storytelling style will be more Left 4 Dead.
- Humans segregated between Earth and frontier planets. Corporation trying to take the resources of these frontier people.

Update: Looks like Microsoft is pretty much reversing its DRM strategy

http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/update

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.

Mandatory Kinect. £80 more. Still shit lineup. Pass.

Not to mention the bad hardware, and the fact that they even TRIED pulling that DRM shit to begin with.

All this does is create an 'positive' illusion for Microsoft to hide behind, while it remains a PRISM device, with no real potential.

I think it's pretty cool of Microsoft to listen to consumers no matter how much everyone thinks they are a multi conglomerate evil empire like EA

It's called backtracking from PR nightmares, to be honest.

These changes are good but this isn't the first time a big corporation has made a mistake and then went back on it, particularly Microsoft.

I like to think Microsoft aren't that stupid. I like to think they actually spend time researching public opinion on their products. They should know damn well that gamers absolutely loathe mechanisms like DRM to begin with. Publishers know we hate them, it's their investors who tend not to (or not care).

The fixes are great, if they are implemented right, but they shouldn't have been needed to begin with. The industry is not young anymore. It's not old, but it's not so young companies should just "forget" things like this.

Lol, this isn't microsoft listening to consumers. This is microsoft looking at their preorder sales, and making their consumers think they actually care. Again, if Microsoft actually cared, they wouldn't have pulled this shit to begin with.

FUCKING LOL! I hope this gets passed for the sake of comedic value.
