Buying a computer for the future?

Postby Mastakilla » Fri Sep 13, 13 3:47 pm

Basically I'm gonna spend pretty big on a new computer, now I've been on pcspecialist.co.uk going back and forth on what I want on it when I order. I'm not sure if this is the best website to order from or if it's overpriced or not, I just picked it because it ships to Portugal and the shipping costs get calculated in the price as I tweak the configuration so that's nice.

Right now I've decided to hold back on the memory while adding parts (I got 2x4gb DDR3 memory still laying around here) so I picked a single 2gb stick to go in, because unfortunatly they wont let me leave it out entirely lol.

I also decided to hold back on a videocard because I still have my HD 4870 laying around which is fine for any game I want to play at this moment anyway. I don't play anything like BF3 or that kind of stuff so I figure I wont need a graphic card upgrade right now. I will look to upgrade to at least a HD 7870 in the near future but for right now I'm going to be saving money on the graphics card.

So that leaves me with a budget of ~€850 to get a future proof desktop PC without spending big on memory and graphics right off the bat.

So far I decided to go with the following:
Case COOLERMASTER ELITE 311 BLUE CASE

Processor (CPU) AMD FX-4350 Quad Core CPU (4.3/4.2GHZ - 4MB CACHE/AM3+)

Motherboard ASUS® SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 (DDR3, USB3.0, 6Gb/s, CrossFireX/Sli)

Memory (RAM) 2GB KINGSTON DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz (1 x 2GB)
It wont let me leave the memory out entirely, like I said i got 2x4gb DDR3 sticks laying around here, should be fine for me?

Memory - 1st Hard Disk 1TB WD CAVIAR BLACK WD1002FAEX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (7200rpm)

1st DVD/BLU-RAY Drive 24x DUAL LAYER DVD WRITER ±R/±RW/RAM

Power Supply CORSAIR 550W VS SERIES™ VS-550 POWER SUPPLY
Processor Cooling Corsair H40 Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler

Extra Case Fans 1 x 12CM Black Case Fan (configured to extract from rear/roof)

Sound Card ONBOARD 8 CHANNEL (7.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)

Wireless/Wired Networking WIRELESS 802.11N 150Mbps PCI-E CARD (Special Offer)

USB Options MIN. 2 x USB 3.0 & 4 x USB 2.0 PORTS @ BACK PANEL + MIN. 2 FRONT PORTS

Power Cable 1 x 2 Metre European Power Cable (Kettle Lead)

Operating System Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit w/SP1 - inc DVD & Licence

DVD Recovery Media Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) DVD with paper sleeve

Monitor AOC 18.5" WIDESCREEN LED TFT - 1366 x 768, 5MS, D-Sub, DVI-D

Warranty 3 Year Standard Warranty (1 Month Collect & Return, 1 Year Parts, 3 Year Labour)

Delivery 4 - 5 DAY DELIVERY TO PORTUGAL (€46)

Build Time Standard Build - Approximately 9 to 11 working days

Price (including VAT and delivery to Portugal) €853,00
So it comes up to just over my budget which is fine at €853 which is including a monitor.
I'm especially excited about the motherboard, it looks kinda sexy.
But I would like to have some input from others because I'm still going back and forth and I'm just really encertain, halp?

You might need more than a 550W PSU especially if you're gonna upgrade to a 7870 in the future, might I suggest a 650W or 700W?

Good choice on that H40 you gonna be overclocking

What's with that Recovery Media stuffs tho?

I figured the 550W PSU should be enough to run even a 7870 should it not? I could go for a 650W PSU possibly but it will go even more over budget (initially set my limit to like 800 max and now it's 850, rather not go up to 900 xD)

I don't know why I included the Recovery Media stuffs in the post, I just copied the entire quote I have from the website. I'm not sure what it is, I just comes with the Windows 7 install. Which I can also decide to leave out and save like €93. Mmm

Yeah man nobody buys windows anymore, piracy is the way of the future

550W i feel isn't really sufficient for a high powered graphics card like a 7870. It can definitely run it but you might have issues down the line, a 650 or a 700W is just future proofing your system so you dont have to upgrade the PSU constantly, na'msayin?

I always use this to calculate the required PSU:

A bit of overheard is never a bad thing if you can afford it, keeping in mind that PSU's (and the other components) naturally degrade over time.

What's great about this tool is that it accounts for that.
