Deus Ex Alpha

I waited for Olympus long enough and now I don't think it's coming very soon and it's about time to upgrade our forum. I decided to use modified phpBB 2.0.x as it seems that you people don't like vB or Invision. I'm not going to do the work by myself though.

Talking about styles, there are going to be only two — c3s and some white one which looks similar to Classic. Classic is going to be removed because it's old.

Mods will be kept the same, except I'd like to add a proper warning system available for moderators, also subforums and quick reply. There are going to be some security enhancements which include, for example, limit for editing messages.

However, changing to Olympus will be done as soon as it's released and it's release seems to be stable.

The work hasn't started yet and I'm all ears for requests.

You will be buying vB Just for this forum if we said we liekd it?

SMF is a much better forum. It's free, it's probably got other features, and it's very customizable. Did I mention it's free? It's free, free free free, and it looks good. It's also free, and it doesnt cost as much as vB. And it comes with a lot more adminhax built in!

MainMan. It's ok to get an IPB or vB forum, if you have a few hundred quid to through away. Also, Dae, PHPBB3 Beta 5 "Olympus" has been out for ages 0,0... Even if it is a beta

Probably doesn't trust any beta's for a popular forum.

If you guys liked vB I'd buy it, yes. I'm going to do quite similar thing - hire a pro who'd tune phpBB for me for some amount of money.

Our Russian community already bought an Invision (they had phpBB too), but the popularity of our forum there has significantly dropped and some of those who keeped visiting it, still complained about usability. I wouldn't argue with them that phpBB is much more 'usable'. Using Invision requires some sort of skill while phpBB is still available to anyone.

Unfortunately in forums market growth of functionality means drop of usability. But it isn't a problem of programmers, but designers who fail to realise that putting lots of links and buttons, graphical elements and tables, which at first blush, make the forum better, in fact does the opposite thing.

Rickard Andersson realised this and coded his own board called punBB, which unsuprisingly became very popular. PunBB uses a very simple yet understandable design, which also could be customized to any layout by a program like this.
PunBB, however, needs some core hacking just like phpBB, too.

SMF sucks by usability too.

I'm not going to use beta. As I said, I'd change when the version seems to be stable enough of me.
Not to mention that Olympus hardly has any themes available.
