Infact it does go to the label, as they actually do own their songs.
But their merchindise don't.

Basically a band releases an album right?
They sell this album so much...but guess who gets most of the royalties for the sale?
The record label do.

But when a band sets up a merch store or whatever, they get most or all of the royalties of the moneys.
So they're better off when you buy shirts, tour shirts, hoodies, albums at the gigs, biographies and posters etc.

Most of the above story applies there.

Interesting story, but again this is only anecdotal evidence. The article merely states that band x were attempting to increase profits through giving away free CD's. No where did it make the overall generalisation that you made that bands will always profit more from merchandise

Again, this article makes no mention of how much they make from independent merchandise. This could be anything from 1 - 100%. It provides no figures.

Again, this is merely one musicians opinion on the matter. He is pretty much the same as you, giving an opinion without backing it up with solid figures. I'm not explicitly denying that Iron Maiden do make more from merchandise than record sales. For all I know they maybe do. But I have seen no convincing evidence that this is the case.

I don't agree or disagree with you! I simply have no proof that merch sales help more than CD sales, so I continue to purchase CD's.

Well, that's not entirely true. I like the feeling of physically owning CD's and being able to look through booklets and so forth =)
