What exactly is Progressive Rock?

Postby Siva » Fri Apr 02, 10 12:31 pm

I listened to some QotSA this morning and midway through go with the flow I figured what I could get that sounded like this.

I discovered Tangerine Dream this same morning and their Flame album sounds like everything Mass Effect 2's OST should have been.

What strikes me as weird though is that these don't even sound remotely similar.

So what makes something progressive rock?

Prog rock often features unusual time signatures such as 5/4 or 7/8 that aren't found in popular music.

Or use of polyrhythms (Meshuggah), change in time signature (Death) or use of unconventional instruments/vocals (Focus or Ayreon).

Of course Death and Meshuggah are more metal but the principle is the same.

Also, concept albums are usually considered progressive like with Pink Floyd.

Because it has a certain drone quality to it, backs off on the guitars to make them more of an ambient setpiece yet still holds the aggression found in rock in the drums.

He's not in HK.

On another note, whenever I see XM stations called "Progressive Rock" they're almost always playing 80's glam.

I would consider Queens of the Stone Age more of an Alternative band.

My favourite prog rock would have to be King Crimson. I'm not too into prog though anymore. Bring on the ska and reggae!

Ska has gotten a bit stale... at least in my area. All the bands sound the same. I still have love for the Specials, though.
