Anything released from 1980 - 88 is golden, but I would especially recommend Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, although you may not enjoy the synth's.

Oh yeah, and when you find a few albums of theirs you particularly like, support the band and buy the thing :P

Actually.
I'd rather download CDs, and buy their merchindise.

I had this argument with Bob before for buying CDs, and refused to admit it just goes to the label.

Infact it does go to the label, as they actually do own their songs.
But their merchindise don't.
Buy their merch and make 'em richer!...and look good in doing it!

Could you clarify the parts in bold please? I didn't quite get your message.

Insert this word in some places: Money.
I had this argument with Bob before for buying CDs, and refused to admit the money just goes to the label.

Infact the money does mostly go to the label, as they actually do own their songs.
But their merch, the label doesn't get any of it!
You cheat.

Now work it out.

I still don't understand exactly what you mean. Why do you have to be so obtuse? I was merely asking for you to expand on your comments, and you further confuse me with "you cheat" o_O

GJ cataclysm on buying Powerslave, it's one of my faves. Particularly Rime of the Ancient Mariner

lol.

Oh right:

Basically a band releases an album right?
They sell this album so much...but guess who gets most of the royalties for the sale?
The record label do.

But when a band sets up a merch store or whatever, they get most or all of the royalties of the moneys.
So they're better off when you buy shirts, tour shirts, hoodies, albums at the gigs, biographies and posters etc.

I would have to see figures which proved that the band get's a larger cut from merchandise sales rather than CD sales. I'm not quite sure why this would be the case O_o

Most of the above story applies there.

http://www.berklee.edu/news/2005/01/narm.html
In a typical record deal, an artist receivesâ??at bestâ??15 percent of the profits from record sales, after recouping the cost of making the record. Meanwhile, the artist's touring, management, merchandising, and publishing generally are conducted independent of the label.

"I don't have sympathy for the record companies," said Mickey Melchiondo of the rock duo Ween. "They haven't been paying me royalties anyway."Musicians tend to make more money from sales of concert tickets and merchandise than from CD sales. In fact, many musicians offer free downloads of their songs on their Web sites to market themselves."

Lol. Powerslave was one of Maiden's best, along with Dance of Death.

Interesting story, but again this is only anecdotal evidence. The article merely states that band x were attempting to increase profits through giving away free CD's. No where did it make the overall generalisation that you made that bands will always profit more from merchandise

Again, this article makes no mention of how much they make from independent merchandise. This could be anything from 1 - 100%. It provides no figures.

Again, this is merely one musicians opinion on the matter. He is pretty much the same as you, giving an opinion without backing it up with solid figures. I'm not explicitly denying that Iron Maiden do make more from merchandise than record sales. For all I know they maybe do. But I have seen no convincing evidence that this is the case.

Any favourite songs yet Tomsk?

If you want figures, find them yourself because I had trouble finding them!

Heh, that's kind of my point.

I don't agree or disagree with you! I simply have no proof that merch sales help more than CD sales, so I continue to purchase CD's.

Well, that's not entirely true. I like the feeling of physically owning CD's and being able to look through booklets and so forth =)

Have you heard anything off Somewhere in Time or Seventh Son of a Seventh Son? I ask because these two albums are quite different from the rest of the output in that they have pretty heavy synths throughout. Anyway, you should check em out ;)
